Hei Matthew, I mentioned that you were really impressed with the latest Sharp LED-lit TVs.

Were they brand new models D920, 910,820 models ? Or LE series reviewed here ?

I am dying to see their new beasts. I think Sony will be using Sharp panels as well so we might expect some breakthroughs. And it would be really interesting to see what Sony, Philips and Sharp could do with the same panels, but different data processing.

It was the LE700 I saw in 40", and it really stood out as being a very capable set to me. Very good build quality as well - much better than other Sharp sets I've seen in recent years.

On the panel front some of the bigger, LED-lit sets in the new Sony range do use Sharp panels I believe. I'm not sure what the breakdown is between different models though because there are several suppliers of panels for 2010, including SLCD and another Korean manufacturer.

i agree with you that this gen of tvs is a ****** of a time to get a set to be 100 percent happy with but as most people do not notice these flaws or consider them to be flaws us picky are the ones who suffer:)

I may be wrong but i cannot remember there being all these issues with crts for all those years that is cuz that technology went for many years with not much change where now every year they seem to change things all the time and these tvs are not built to last past the 5years guarantee anyway or even inside that a friend of mine had his samsung 40 inch screen went after 2 years when he called samsung they said parts not available anymore you will need a new tv when if most of us did not bin our crts i bet they would be working sd but still working!!!

BTW are you still having that issue? is it a vertical line?

Thanks Matt,

much appreciated for the feedback and this week i'm going back to the retailer now i have a better understanding of my position. I plan to ask the retailer to test the tv over a period of time maybe a day or so and see what happens then, i hope that they will see the clouding at the top and the line under motion after an extended viewing. I feel this is probably my only hope of a solution but i should add that up to now i have no complaints about my retailer and the service i have received...my only gripe is that it's a 45mile journey each way to get to the retailer.

From discussions i've had with the retailer they think it unlikely that they will repair the set if it's faulty and they have no stock of the W5500 i currently own so i will have to take the equivalent model in the new range but what tv should i be asking for from the new range?? As you work at a Sony Centre i presume you know the specs of the new range so would really appreciate your thoughts on what tv is of the same spec in the new range just in case i end up having to replace the tv.

Once again many thanks Matt

The equivalent set, in terms of spec, in the new range would be the KDL-40EX503 which has the 100Hz/BE3 etc. but also adds a Freeview HD tuner.

Do let us know how things work out.

Regards
Matt.

snakey,

My W5500 was manufactured in August 09, does this have any bearing on the quality of set you receive? Would i be right in assuming the later the date of manufacture the higher your chances of getting a good set? With the quality of Sony tv's of late that hypothesis would ring true......

i was just wondering the date your set is from as you would think the newer they are less likely to have this backlight issue that is all I am considering going back to sony centre as i think my smearing issue is either getting worse or i am getting more wound up by it:( add to that the backlight bleed or clouding in the top corners i am now regretting getting this tv
