Playing Spotify through this setup, will it sounds amazing on the AKGs or will it show up the non-amazing bitrate that Spotify streams?

My set up includes the K702s, FubarII USB DAC and Spotify and Spotify is by no means the weak link. Spotify streams at the highest bit rate out at the moment with its premium service at 320kbps. Sky Songs streams at about 16kbps (yes, sixteen), yet some prefer it to Spotify. More important than the kbps is the format used and Spotify's Ogg Vorbis is great.

I am confident that your suggested setup will sound fabulous. It will drip with detail, rock when required and give you a super hifi experience.

Thanks - do you reckon they'd be the best choice of headphones for me? I listen to about 50% classical music, chamber and orchestral (some Spotify/some 256 AAC/some CD) and 50% pop/chart music (Spotify).

Obviously open is necessary for the soundstage etc. but will they excel at chart music or should I consider something like the DT880 too?

I have an absolute maximum of £250 to spend on the 'phones.

I dont know the DT880s at all. The K702s excel at detail and sound stage and hifi reproduction. They are always on the highly recommended for classical listening as they can help you to pick out individual instruments like no othet headphones I have heard. I then happily use them to listen to metal and what little pop I listen to.

Where they 'lack' with such music is that they do not do deep crashing thudding bass. They do highly detailed and clear bass. Initially that means they appear to lack dynamics. But once you get used to them, you realise that bass can be hifi too and it should provide rhythm and depth rather than drive the music along overwhelming the midrange.

The bottom line is that the K702s are a marmite brand and you should buy from somewhere you can return them if you find them too lean and cold.

A joy of head-fi is that after a while you do not need to compromise as speakers have to with different types of music. You instead build up a collection of appropriate headphones.
