I'm looking to get my first big LCD/Plasma, and have been trying to do as much research as possible. From the magazines & online reviews the Sony W4000 & W4500 and Panasonic PX/PZ ranges seem to be pretty fail-safe once you get the set-ups right, and I like the look of both manufacturers sets (not so keen on the LG & Samsung ranges).

I have a budget of £800 max., and am looking for something 37-42 inches. On a visit to my local Empire Direct this morning I spotted the JVC 42DS9BJ for £699 - I had previously seen this set and liked it, but the £1200 price tag put me off a little! It is one of the thinnest sets I've seen, and has a tiny border around the screen, which I really like.

The only problem is I can't find many reviews of it - the only ones I found were user reviews on the empire direct website (all good).

I will mostly be using it to watch standard def TV through the freeview tuner, with a possible upgrade to Sky sometime soon, along with games and movies on the PS3. As with all modern TV's the high def performance of the JVC set looks pretty stunning compared to what I'm used to when viewed in the store, and when you read the spec list everything seems in line with the Sony LCD's apart from the contrast. The LCD is quoted at 1500:1 (7500:1 dynamic) which seems a bit low compared to the Sony's and Panasonic's. I know I'm not going to get Plasma-blacks on an LCD, but will I notice the lower contrast ratio when I get it set up in my lounge watching a blu-ray?

If anyone knows of a review of this TV anywhere, please point me in the right direction!

Thanks, Ben

Hi,

There are quite a few reviews on this set if you google them. I too really wanted this set due to the aesthetics but even at the discounted price I am deciding against it - for me the black levels simply are not good enough and the set does suffer from some serious motion handling issues. It is not a 100hz set and it's upgrade was suddenly withdrawn. Fact is, you could buy far better for the money - a Panasonic plasma would walk all over this set in almost every respect as would probably some of the newer Samsung & Sony LCD's.ÿ

JVC have been seriously behind the curve with the HDTV's compared to other makes - I am waiting to see if they have got their act together and will be introducing anything at CES 2009 - They may introduce RGB LED Backlit versions of this set (hopefully with far better processing than the current range) so that should be a significant step forward if it happens. They may also beÿintroducingÿthe new ones with 180hz processing as they had such prototypes at shows earlier this year. JVC has apparently said they will be increasing prices by 30% this year but I am not letting that worry me - they simply will not sell as the competition is far too strong and with far more choice - there are some real gems coming out from other players this year - JVC can raise prices all they want - it means either people will buy other brands, they will sell even less than they are selling now or they will have no choice but to reduce prices in line with the competition. ÿI would either buy an Panny plasma instead or wait a while & see what the new ranges bring.
