Just what is HDMI True Black?

Hi,

I am more than a little confused about HDMI True Black because I have a Finlux TV and when I set the True Black to on all it seems to do is increase the Backlight of the panel by a serious amount. This has the effect of increasing shadow detail but also making the picture appear washed out.Blacks can start to appear grey. No way can I see that it improves the blacks but it does the opposite. Oddly I read a Trusted review of a Finlux TV with True Black and they said they didn't use the function because although it deepened blacks it also led to a loss of shadow detail. I can't understand how they got the exact opposite effect to me.

I wonder if anyone who has experience of this HDMI True Black option would be so kind as to clear up this mystery for me.

Just turn it off m8 it's just one of those digital enhancements that either does nothing or ultimately just makes the picture worse.

its down to personal preference but with the loss of shadow detail just turn off

i have all the rubbish on my TV turned off ,very little off it does anything to improve picture quality except maybe with DVDs.

Hi theflyingwasp,

I think you are right when you say that all the picture enhancement settings actually make things worse but I was really confused as to why something called True black makes the blacks grey and also why the review that I read said that it made blacks deeper but with loss of shadow detail. I found the exact opposite.
