Result! They're going for a song now folks - remember all the £200 lark in HMV? Well, if you haven't bought it, would like but don't want to shell out the retail prices instore or online, *** over to Ebay and grab one of the many that are going for between £65 and £80 new and sealed.

Just won mine on auction for £53 - delighted and can't wait for it to turn up. All of the mono sets - unlike the stereo equivalents - were put together in Japan and the mini-LP packaging is way better apparently than the regular stereo releases in the shops (inner sleeves, etc.), so if you're thinking about it still...

Hi RS, Before leaving feedback for the seller, make sure you check that it's a genuine boxed set, as there are apparantly a lot of counterfeits doing the rounds at the moment...

But you are correct, the boxed set is presented beautifully, with chronologically correct disk labelling, original "use emitex" inner sleeves etc etc...

Wasn't there a thread here recently pertaining to the fraudulent Mono box editions doing the rounds?

Or is that just my sour grapes because I shelled out the best part of £200 last September?

Good luck, RS.

Let us know what you think.

What with the Neil Young BD & vinyl re-issues, the Kraftwerk vinyl set and the Beatles Mono box, I seem to have spent a fair chunk of 2009 and most of this year listening to "old" music, freshly presented.

Just to show I'm not completely locked in a past-tense groove, I've just ordered the new Broken Bells album. Can't wait! James Mercer is a wonderful thing.

Do you want to borrow my Dansette to play it on.

Saw on the TV this morning (so it must be true, eh?) that the single that spent the most time on the number 1 spot throughout the 60s was Rolf Harris's "Two Little Boys" and the single that spent the most total time in the charts was Gene Pitney's "Please Release Me".

Bet those factoids shatter a few myths

My bad

I was born in 65, so really never made it past Pinky and Perky and Rolf Harris anyway.

Not sure what the fakes would be like, but I hear the mono remasters are the ones to for for as mono master tapes are virtually untouched, whereas the stereo masters have been used to death.

Thanks for the heads up guys, especially JD for the link. It's on its way now, but we'll see when it arrives. It might be that EMI have dumped off excess stock that aren't shifting (£200 a pop, hello? Is there a copyright deadline coming up?!) and small traders are picking sets up cheap off wholesale, or it could be a dud. If the former, then job's a good 'un, if the latter, I'll get a refund via PayPal as a "goods not as described" complaint.

Will let you know how it all goes.

Okay, so it arrived today. Went along to the post office to pick it up and took some photos of the parcel. Well wrapped, a couple of dings in the packaging from the journey. Somebody told me about the inner sleeves earlier, are these proper card mini inner sleeves with lyrics, but CD sized, or just plain cellophane CD shaped wraps? No writing, flimsy plastic?

The label on the back of the box is in good nick, but the label is coming away in places.

Thoughts guys? Is there anywhere which shows the content of the mini-LP?

just open and check it - if not right contact buyer - hopefully will respond - if not you'll have to start a dispute as not as described you'll get your money back!

Thanks Chebby, looks like it's a duffer. I will add, however, that it's a decent effort...but the inner sleeves are suspect.

Thats disappointing RS. Are you going to open a dispute with Ebay?

What do they sound like....Not strictly kosher but if it were me and they sounded OK, I think would be tempted to keep them and put it down to experience. But then again, there is some scroat on the bay making, I suspect, decent money out of this....what to do...what to do....

Aye, indeed Ray, that's the thing - he's sold a bunch of these on the bay recently and (this is the thing) they're all listed as Private sales, so you never see the Mono Box listings, just who bought the item. Assume each makes £40-50, buying them for what £20? If that?

Soundwise, they're okay, but I don't have the original to compare to. Heard worse that's for sure and it might be it's a straight rip of the digital original to the copy. Easy to do right? So, you get a copy (and the copy if merely good, forget decent), but against the real thing there's too much missing.

I emailed the guy last night, waiting for a reply and if it doesn't work then I'll go to Ebay, EMI and PayPal. I'm tempted to mention "counterfeit boxset" on the feedback too, but we'll see how that goes.
