Just a couple of thoughts about soundbases

For as long as I can remember we are told in order to get the best out of our systems always avoid stacking components on top of each other to avoid vibration and interference that can have a negative effect on sound, so it must also apply that by putting your tv directly on top of a soundbase your picture will suffer from the vibrations esp if its got sub woofers built in and therefore have a negative effect on the tv picture.

Would you agree ?

My other thought about soundbases is because they are just a small square box how would you get a stereo effect from them, the sound is going to just come from the centre of the tv, at least with a sound bar the speakers are spread out for a wide stereo effect.

Sure, why not? Would you notice? Probably not.

I'd suggest you'd get as much of a stereo effect as you will from the TV itself. These things aren't designed to replace a good stereo setup (never mind a full AV surround system), they're just a first step to improve the audio from a TV, without needing a load of other boxes to do it. It's about simplicity, not ultimate performance.

I somehow doubt that the output from a soundbase is likely to cuase a 32, 40 or 50 inch screen to vibrate. All these boxes do is provide a better speaker system than is provided from teh screen. They are not as powerful as soundbars / sub woofers and are just there to help boots volume, be it spoken work or additional sounds. They are NOT a replacement for an amp or surround sound.

Unlike traditional components, which aren't typically designed - either from strength or ventilation point of view - to be stacked, soundbases are engineered from the outset to be sat under the TV.

That has implications on everything from their extra-rigid casings (able to take TVs up to 40Kg, when today's typical TVs weigh less than half that) to the position of their speaker drivers, and - as noted - use of DSP technology to make most of their position.

But as noted above -and on other threads - they're not designed to replace true surround sound systems.
