I'm currently playing my music collection from iTunes (ALAC) over ethernet to an old Apple TV 3 with an optical connection to my DAC (Arcam irDAC). Although Roon looks really interesting I'm quite wedded to iTunes but I'm wondering if replacing the Apple TV with something more audio specific (like an Allo DigiOne) and will yield any improvements to sound quality?
Most of my music is red book quality, though I have a few 24bit ALAC / AIFF files. I understand the ATV3 tops out at 16bit and upsamples everything to 48kHz. Though the AirPort Express (which I also own) delivers a true 44.1kHz output of the red book files.
If I swap the ATV3 out for something like the Allo DigiOne will it play the 24bit files in all their glory and will it sound better than the ATV3 with the red book files. Or can anyone suggest a better way of delivering my iTunes files to my DAC?
