iTunes server missing tracks

Hi - I've recently consolidated my iTunes and Sonos libraries in to one on my NAS. Now i've noticed that I have an option of 'Itunes server' in the side bar in iTunes - I can't remember noticing it before and my NAS does have an option to run an 'itunes server' so I assume it wasn't previously there.

However I'm not sure what it does exactly - would having the iTunes server running on my NAS enable me to stream tracks using airplay (if I had any airplay equipped devices) without having to have my computer on?

My main question is that i've noticed that not all of my tracks are listed when I click on the iTunes server option - almost 100gb of my library is missing. I checked some of the missing tracks and they are all located in my NAS perfectly fine, and accessible via the normal iTunes library view. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks.

Dan, I have just completed a similar exercise with a Synology NAS which now streams wirelessly my entire iTunes library to my Sony 770 BDP conected via optical to my amp without needing my computer on. If your library is anything like mine your start up time on your computer is now lighting, I also see the NAS in the side bar and you need to double click on it to enable your iTunes on your PC to "See" it. Regarding the missing files I also had some end up in the wrong place and just had to right click to get the file path information and then ensure everything was on the NAS before finally removing all trace of the music files from my PC's hard drive. It was time consuming but worth the time invested. good luck

Cheers Motley. I am sure that i've moved all the tracks, that they are in the right place and also that all trace has been removed from the computer HDD. To confirm this I have gone in under the normal 'library' in iTunes and verified the location of the files by doing a 'get info', whereas trying to find the same files under the 'itunes server' link on the itunes sidebar is unsuccessful....it's very odd.

I'm definitely liking the NAS approach. It's less problematic than using my Apple time capsule as a pseudo-NAS for Sonos and now i've got all my photos and a few movie files on it too. My only slight bugbear is that my Sony BDP-570 seems to be a bit fussy about file formats which is a pain, so my MKV movie files (with DTS soundtracks - I think that may be the issue) and JPG photos won't stream. So I still have to plug my mac in to my HC amp and stream to that using a brilliant app called Plex. Have you had any issues with streaming to your Sony BDP? What music files are you streaming out of interest, and have you tried photos or movies with any success?

I have tried to stream photos with the DS Photo app without much sucess however I think this is more to do with my lack of understanding and file sizes.

All the music I am streaming is Apple Lossless which I hadn't expected to be able to do with Codecs etc but it does without complaint which I find odd, because if you plug an Ipod into the usb on the front panel it refuses to have any of it!
