Does anyone know if enabling the soundcheck on iTunes (Preferences - Playback) will affect sound quality to any great degree? I presume that all it does is adjust the original volumes of the tracks to around the same so you do not have to keep adjusting the volume when changing track. If you look under Get Info and Summary of a track you'll see a Volume bit with a +/- dB value if you have it enabled.

Another thing I noticed is that even if you deselect it, if you select it during the burn disc menu it still seems to show up after. You can get rid of it by going through the burn disc process, deselecting it, then cancelling the process.

The general consensus is to remove all digital processing to get the best sound. I have sound check etc turned off and itunes volume set to maximum using my amp to control the volume instead.

I can't answer your second issue but to say don't select it during burning!

+ 1 in the digital domain you only have so many bits to acurately represent an analog waveform. !6 bits in the case of iTunes I beleive if you start playing about with volume control you're effectively "throwing away" bits and therefore resolution. So the short answer is like idc says forget digital processing, features like sound check and use maximum volume.
