Yes i know, but then how many terminator editions have there been, why make money out of just one edition when you can release another edition the following year

You can enjoy them both!

Now should I wait another year for the extended version .... best get my 5.1 sorted before I do, in which case I will have to wait another year before I make up my mind.

I'm glad these movies are finally coming out, they should be great for showing off the system. I am in agreement that the less longing ambiguous gazes between hobbits the better. Though for the fans, even though it was never going to happen, they should have made them so you could opt for the theatrical or extended version via seamless branching. Universal does this extremely well on many of their discs.

Surely with all the extra disc space on BD both versions of each movie should be on each disc but then the studios would only sell 1 box set to a punter rather than the constant dribble of special editions that periodically arise.

Personally I think I will be sticking with the DVDs as I am a bit fed up with LOTR and can think of Movies I don't already own that I would rather buy.

Yeah well its all about making money out of the punter. Don't know if I could justify shelling out for BD version, dread to think what the price will be like when it first comes out.Perhaps the studios will allow us to trade in our DVD versions.

All three original theatrical versions "the way it was meant to be seen".

When are the extended versions being released, any news?

And as for "the way it was meant to be seen" by the studio you mean, otherwise, why would Peter Jackson re-edit the films adding to the story line and improving the overall experience?

At £15 a film, I would have liked the full versions to have been included. Oh well.

As for those that say "Oh no, not again", some of us out there would like the full package, I personally love the films for their quality, cgi and cinematic beauty. Not every ones cup of tea granted, go off and have a coffee, but for us that do want it it will be great to see and use as a show piece, preparing to sit down with popcorn, couple bottles of wine and watch another 600+mins.... if and when it finally arrives "the way it was REALLY meant to be seen".

Dam site better than 2012 as well.

Hopefully it'll have more than 5.1. Even the DVD version (of the extended versions) has a 6.1 DTS soundtrack.

When I last watched all three extended versions back-to-back, I think it rolls in at 10 and 3/4 hours.....

Just out of curiosity, what is the difference between the theatrical versions and the extended versions? I know they are extended before someone says. What I mean is, which scenes are different, how different and does it effect the whole film? I've seen the extended versions, would I be disappointed with the theatrical versions?

obviously the overall direction of the story isnt affected but i felt that the characters were given more depth and relationships were better explored in the extended versions (it was particualrly beneficial for the Denethor/Boromir/Faramir story arc which isnt explored enough in the theatricals)

in the extended boxsets it tells you which scenes are new and which have been extended and those that havent been changed at all. From memory I think that almost 50% of the scenes are extended or new.

i used to own the theatricals and then swapped to the extended when they came down in price. I wont go back to the theatricals and will wait for the extended blu rays before parting with my readies

forgot to mention - i dont have anything against hollywood doing directors cuts or extended versions (blade runner's one of my all-time favs) and actually like to decide which is my favourite - i prefer the theatrical release of apocalyse now to the redux version
