I never got round to buying a new tv at the end of last year, but need to now. i was going to purchase a philips 42 9664 however with new models and 3d on the horizon will this purchase be a bad one ! in 2001 ( i think) i bought a new crt tv because plasma was too expensive and lcd weren't quite there but 2-3 years later and prices had plummeted. basically i wanted shot of the crt. will that be the same if i spend a lot on the philips now, or should I buy a decent 42 inch now (for say £7-900) and put up with it till i no doubt will want to upgrade in 2-3 years from now ?? what do you reckon - are we at a turning point

just buy what you like, if you wait for the next thing then in 20 years time you will still be watching tv and films on your crt. you will all way buy somthing and then in 6 months think I wish I had waited.

id wait , it wont be long now before the 2010 range of tvs are rolling out , a 42pfl9664 is £1500 , you can get a panasonic 42g10 for around £700 , a very nice tv for the price , freesat hd may be useful , you could move it to the bedroom in the summer to make way for your main tv which would be right up to date , and well reviewed ...

I agree with maxflinn, manufactures will be bringing out new models soon, it'll be a big step up from the 2009 range, i would wait untill the new models are released.

It depends what you want. If you want one with the latest technology, 3D ready etc etc, then no - wait 2 or 3 years. If you just want a good quality screen, then yes. Wait a few months and see what Panasonic come up with regarding the Kuro brand. If they're as good as the Pioneer's, they'll be the best screen you' be able to buy.

Avoid the 9664. For the price it has a tragic flaw that some of us on this very forum are experiencing... dirty screen effect. Appalling for a £1500 TV.

Get a Panasonic Plasma.

roger06:What will be the point of a 3D TV? There won't be any content for it...

Theirs plenty of 3D content at the cinema, it's still early day's, but i pressume avatar will be released on blu-ray when 3D tv's become available.

If you are not a sky subscriber this is the time to pick up a bargain on last year's model. Got a SONY KDL-37W5500 for 675 euros at the weekend and no backlight clouding issues.

There's no point waiting for 3D TV's unless you are willing to pay for 3D content (either 3D blu ray disks or sky 3D).

Let's face it there's still precious little genuine HDTV outside sports channels. And if you think I'm sitting down with multi-coloured specs to watch Big Brother, X-factor, Strictly or any of the other c**p that's usually on TV think again.
