Is there such a thing as a free download?

Been up most of th night with my daughter, pretty unwell. Anyway I watched a programme on News 24 called 'Click' and gives all the latest of modtech stuff. They had a feature on downloading and mentioned that most sites offer 'free' downloads for music, reiterated that the freebies often have commercials that cut in halfway through a track.

So are there any sites that allow free downloads or do you have to pay a subscription to obtain the best and widest range, minus the adverts?

Just found this - I'll have a good read and see if it makes sense http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/9413439.stm. Meantime, if anyone wishes give additional info it'll be appreciated.

(Hope this makes sense - I feel wrecked, so the sack beckons).

Don't think you get much for nothing PP!

Itunes do a free single of the week, and without searching around too much I'd guess you can get promo stuff etc and of course bands who can afford to do often offer free downloads (b sides etc) to fan club / web site members.

Hope your daughters feeling better and you can get some kip!

'In Rainbows' by Radiohead was free if you wanted it to be so. E-music also offer 50 free downloads as an incentive to join their site. They are free to the user, but still cost someone else money.
