It depends what you're using the PS3 for. If you're just looking for basic surround sound (like Dolby Digital and DTS), then yes, you can connect it up via an optical cable and this will provide this.

If you're watching Blu-Ray though, these come with a whole host of other new Hi-Def sound formats (Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD being the main ones) which the PS3 can decode and output via HDMI. The Panasonic couldn't cope with these though as this would require the PS3 is connected up by HDMI which it can't do (though you would still get the standard Dolby Digital or DTS soundtracks via the optical cable on these discs). I don't know any Panasonic systems with an HDMI in though I'm afraid.

Generally, the Panasonic home cinema systems are not rated that highly. Personally, I think your money would be better spent if you could look at a system by a different manufacturer, but it's your choice in the end.

I have checked and this system has a hdmi port and is 1080p-up?

Does that make any difference? If I take one hdmi to the ps3 from the tv and one hdmi from the tv to the panny PTsc850eb would that then give me surrond sound from the ps3???

Thanks

It does have an HDMI output (for its own internal DVD player), but you couldn't hook the PS3 up to this as it's an output, not an input. As I said though, you can get the standard 5.1 surround sound modes (i.e. Dolby Digital and DTS) through an optical connection to the Panasonic. You just won't be able to get the new Hi-Def sound formats found on Blu-Ray movie discs and some games such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and uncompressed PCM soundtracks.
