Is it worth repairing a NAD 304 amp?

I have a NAD 304 with a channel that switches of intermittently. Once it goes off, it only comes on again if I turn the volume control. There's an audible click as it comes on.

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth getting it repaired. I don't know if this is a quality budget amp - I bought it some years ago and since the fault haven't used it.

Another thought is that as I build computers it may be easyish to repair an amp - maybe that's fairly easy if this is a 'standard' fault?

I realise this is a bit of a 'long as a piece of string' question but if anyone has views I'd be grateful.

Is the volume scratchy when you turn it up and down?

No, the channel justcomes on again with a click. When the channel is working the vol control is fine.

Could be a faulty cap, cold solder joint, relay or a transistor. My guess is a cold solder joint which might be the most costly repair option because reflowing solder on a PCB is labor intensive. If the service tech is plainly swapping cheap parts, it is usually worth fixing the amp (to the owner).

Have you also tried pushing all switches and tone controls to detect if some of them are intermitent due to dust? Give them a bit of a workout with lots of pushing and turning and see if it improves.

Hi, well the 304 looks like it has good specs from what i've seen on the net. There are some sites for repairing it or upgrading it. If your confident with soldering and electronics you could give it a go or see if you can find a technician who can.

Otherwise I would suggest a new amplifier. Any of the budget ones would do the job well.
