If the question is as Andrew states then an alternative is to use Amazon, who use mp3 and whose download tool automatically places your purchases in your iTunes library. Bit of a faff but works and avoids duplicates.

I prefer Amazon, its just occasionally I can only find something in itunes. and my media player is WMP. it will play itunes downloads but with slightly irritating complications.

dont want to use itunes from an interface POV even though i think it sounds better than wmp.

winge winge moan moan.

I'm which case, set your iTunes rip settings to be 256k mp3, and whenever you purchase from the store, immediately right click and 'create mp3 version' as Andrew says. This can then be imported into WMP.
