ipod volume

anybody out there knows best way to have volume on ipod the same level, it seems every cd has been produced at a higher or lower level than to others. changed on advanced options in itunes and on ipod itself "normalize volume" but with no or little change. what i have done is gone into itunes and adjusted volume slider in "get info" and altered loads of albums that way, which works, but only when listening through earphones.. playing via hi-fi and car stereo the different sound levels were still evident! any ideas?
