My budget is around £550. I know that's not much for get a solid 37inch but that's all I've got ;)

I basically need it for gaming and watching movies mostly, using the PS3 so hopefully it has 1080p.

I have been looking for hours! I find something that looks good, but then a review or a comment puts me off of it. I don't want to buy something then have a bad experience picture wise.

I saw the LG 37LG5000 and thought it looked very good, but then I read somewhere on these forums that the picture wasn't great.

This is my first HDTV, would it really make a difference to me if I got the LG? I went into Comet a few days ago (although I'm looking to order offline) and a few of the TVs in there had such bad picture quality I'm kind of worried about buying one like that.

If I could get some recommendations, that'd be great.

For that budget I would look at the 37PX80.

I know it is not LCD or 1080p but it really is the only good tv you will get for that kind of dosh.

I wouldn't worry about 1080p either. For a 37" panel you would have to be sitting 5 feet away or less to notice any difference from the lower resolution.

We've got a supertest of 37-40in TVs in our current issue.

For your money, i'd strongly suggest a five-star set in that test - the Panasonic TH37PX80B plasma. It outperforms every other set at anywhere near that money, and can be had for £550 if you shop around.

It's not Full HD spec, but happily takes 1080p, and supports 24fps - so your PS3 (whether with gaming or Blu-ray discs) will look sensational.

There are many happy owners of the set on these forums - many of whom have paired it with a PS3 - and i'm sure they'll be along to confirm that!

EDIT - I see one got in before me already!

Sorry I also forgot to ask, there is no major downside to Plasma over LCD is there? I'm not a TV lover so won't notice the little things.

I've found the cheapest one as well, thanks ;)

Plasma is better than LCD, especially in SD, which I imagine will be how most of your viewing will be

£544 plus £30 delivery here - and there's a 'buy now, pay March 2009' offer on.

I assume at that size (37") 1080p wouldn't make much difference?I'd like a new TV but I had my heart set on a 42" but now I'm not sure!

It all depends on a) how close you sit to your screen and b) the mix of content you watch.

The closer to your TV you sit,and the more HD content you watch, the more a Full HD screen becomes appealing.

And if you can fit a 42in screen into your room, go for it - it makes a much bigger difference than you think to your televisual enjoyment!
