Hi all,

Just purchased my first turntable, a Technics SL-BD20, and am now at the stage of trying to listen to some records. I've connected it to a Cambridge Audio A1mk3 amp with integrated amplifier, however the sound coming out is minimal. Struggling to identify the problem as the previous owner had it playing to me before I transported I home. Online it indicates a pre amp, but only if your amp doesn't already have an integrated amp!? Could it be a cartridge issue? What am I doing wrong?!

Easy. Your amp doesn't have a phono input. Just an input marked aux/phono which means it's line level and can't directly take the feed from a turntable without a phono preamp. When these amps were new I think there was possibly an option to have a phono board fitted internally by the dealer. Yours presumably does not have this. Some budget modern turntables have a phono pre amp built in but I'm guessing your technics is of an age where it will not. You need a different amp with a bult in phono pre amp, an outboard phono pre amp to use with your current amp, or a new turntable with a preamp built in. Take your pick. Welcome, by the way.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, a Behringer PP400 (http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/PP400.aspx) can be had for somewhere around GBP 25 at most "pro" shops or on the Internet (e.g. http://www.thomann.de/intl/behringer_pp400.htm).
