i am going to the IMAX at liverpool one, in the gallery, £22.50 a ticket and you have to be 18, was just wondering has anybody had experience with imax or gallery seats and what are they like compared to normal cinemas, and i decent home cinema (large speakers)

thanks,

IMAX is the best cinema experience I've ever been to, if implemented properly.

Theoretically, the screen is larger than your field of vision, giving you that immersive experience. The problem is, some of the supposed "IMAX screens" are merely normal cinema screens, only larger, but do not cover your field of vision.

I don't know how the Liverpool one is.

Just booked tickets today to go and see Prometheus at the BFI at Waterloo in June, so I'll know better then...

That's a very nice IMAX. I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience. :)

Although bear in mind that Prometheus has been shot with 3D cameras (not IMAX cameras) & then digitally remastered in IMAX format. I do not know if there's a difference as compared to films shot with an IMAX camera (like some scenes in the upcoming Dark Knight Rises).

Thanks for the info, I didn't realise that.

To be be honest, one of the big reasons for going (as well as to see Prometheus of course) was to check out the cinema as I need to find a suitable venue for The Dark Knight Rises...

If I had a choice, I would watch it at the BFI. :)

I didn't know much about IMAX before joining this forum but this sounds like a great idea for both of these movies. Anyone one know of any decent ones closer to northampton

Has anybody experience of the D-box system.Going to see Avengers tomorrow at MK with the kids and wondered if it was worth it

I heard about it in the US, but didn't know it has come to the UK! My friends loved it. Do report back!
The M Keynes one has it (I only found out when I was going to book online). However after consulting with said kids whether they wanted to do it or not,by the time I went back online it was fully booked for the time slot we wanted so I won't be able to review just yet.

I saw Tron Legacy at the Cardiff Bay IMAX. It looked, and more importantly sounded incredible. I'll definately be going there for Prometheus and Dark Knight Rises.

Technically, despite the Epic being a 5K camera, it will actually only output around a 4.25K image once debayered and most films are now mastered to 4K resolution, i.e approx. the same resolution as a good scan of a film shot on traditional 35mm. IMAX film, however is 70mm and thus has way more actual resolution than the '5K' Epic can actually put out, let alone the 4K master from which the IMAX version will be printed from.

Basically, Prometheus should look no better (or worse) than a standard movie blown up to fit on a 'proper' IMAX screen, whereas the Dark Knight Rises will look much better due to the huge amount of resolution available from 70mm film. In practise the lack of grain present and the fact that it has been kept in the digital domain throughout the production process might mean it looks a *bit* better, and it will indeed look stunning on an IMAX screen I'm sure, but just don't go along expecting the same level of 'wow' as you'll get from a 70mm IMAX print.

Hope that helps! :)

Indeed. Allegedly, approx 60 mins of The Dark Knight Rises' final cut will be actual IMAX footage, the remainder will be 'upscaled' 35mm. Nonetheless, no doubt Nolan will have selected the most impressive sequences for the full-fat 70mm

i went liverpool one imax 3D in gallery seats, WOW £22.50 a ticket and worth every penny, first you go up a elevator to the 3rd floor and there a lounge with leather seats and a bar, free popcorn, free pepsi, free nachos. when the adverts finish and the film is about to being, you get shouted in and escorted to your seats.

i dont even need to mention the picture quality or the sound, best experience ever, the avengers is the best film ive ever seen...

though i would let you know....

next up, T-H-X

I go to the BFI imax a lot, basically a sucker for anything remotely sci-fi and on at imax. Dark Knight is probably the best film i have seen there, along with the latest tron film. The Dark Knight Rises prequel was only on at imax's before the mission impossible film and that was serious good, even if only 6 minutes long. I to have tickets booked for Prometheus at the imax, can't wait.

I've seen Star Trek, District 9 and Inception at the BFI IMAX and I can thoroughly recommend it as a venue. If I can get tickets I'll be seeing the Dark Knight there. I've got tickets for Prometheus in June, who knows maybe I'll see the prof. Can't wait for the film, trailers look pretty good :bounce:
