Ill CD Player - Any Ideas?

My Alpha 7 CD has gone on the blink and I wonder if someone would be kind enough to diagnose it for me.

Powers up fine | Tray opens fine
However when the tray closes with a disc the internal mechanism attempts the next step for about 5 secs before ejecting the tray.
It happens with all discs.

I assume I should be taking it to the nearest Arcam dealer for repair but I'd appreciate a first opinion to give me an idea of what to expect.

Maybe the laser is dirty and it is having trouble reading the discs??

I've tried to use a cleaning CD (i.e. one with teeny brushes) but it rejects that in the same way as an audio CD, same noise, same duration sadly same result.

A simple open/close operation with no CD doesn't involve the same mechanical noise so it's definitely triggering a sensor/mechanism that recognises a disc's presence.
