First post so please be kind.

We have moved house and now have a bigger lounge. Need to find a speaker system to run off our sky hd, ps3 and an ipod dock if possible. Really don't know where to start, any suggestions??

Thanks

Budget?

Have you got an amp, or do you need the whole thing.

How big is the room

Lower end budget I suppose, no amp so whole thing required.

The room is 8m x 7m

sorry to ask another question but which is more important to you:-

a) watching movies and game play

b) listening to music.

If you choose (a) it would suggest you need a 2.1 or a 5.1 type set up. choosing (b) would lean more towards a simple stereo set-up.

That's a big room!

As well as welshboy's questions, also can you let us know if you need styling to be a consideration e.g. for the best sound quality, we'd recommend a separates system with larger boxier speakers but they may conflict with how you want the system to look in which case, smaller style speakers or perhaps an all-in-one solution would be a better route to go.

It would also help if you could give an idea on how much you'd like to spend.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Movies and gaming would be my priority for sure. I think I (the wife) would like something low key, small with minimal visual intrusion. Maybe an all in one system would be appropriate? Will I need cables running all over the room though? Budget say circa £300

I know I'm not exactly neutral on this subject, but doesn't everyone think Whin's requirements will be precisely met by a Q Acoustics 'Q-TV'?

Providing of course, he has a flatscreen TV betwen 30" and 50". Q-TV2 fits 30" to 42", Q-TV2X fits 42" to 50".

Very best regards,

Steve Reichert, PR manager - Armour Home (Q Acoustics)

The Q-TV2 certainly looks good if you're not after wires, though it isn't a surround sound system. If you're looking for something just to improve the quality of the sound over your TV, the Q-TV2 could well be just the thing. On the other hand, if you want something which provides surround sound, you'll want an all-in-one 5.1 unit. WHF have a few reviewed (see here and here), though there's not a massive choice in their reviews at this price range. From my experience, Sony and LG do some good ones at around the £300 price mark, though these will involve running wires around the room to the speakers. Worth a trip to somewhere like a Sony shop / Currys / Comet to have look at the options at this price.

Thanks for that. Looking around this site it would seem the Sony BDV-E300 may be worth the extra money. Does anyone know if this will fulfill my requirements?

A pal of mine has one and he says it sounds great. Not heard it myself though. It only has one optical input though so you may need a splitter/switch to use with the Sky and PS3, unless the sky box has coaxial.
