What on earth is a 4.4mm headphone socket for? I've never come across that.
It accommodates 'balanced' headphones by using what's known as a Pentacon plug.
The plug has 5 separate poles, of which 4 are actually used (as opposed to the normal 3 poles used on the 3.5 / 6.35mm jack plugs and sockets that you will be familiar with).

Three pole plugs and sockets mean that the negative return for both channels is common.
Using 4 separate poles means they can give each channel a separate return.....which means that 'balanced' headphones can be used.IMG_20241018_151401_MP.jpg

Thank you for your explanation! You learn something new every day!
