Ideas for next upgrade?

Hi All,

Just replaced my Quad 11L2's with MA RX1's and am pretty happy - the harsh detail is gone, replaced with a far more cohesive sound and much needed bottom end.

Only issue so far is a noticable lower midrange high bass 'hump', which could be down to room acoustics / positioning.

I am want ting to replace my CA 540 V2 pairing, as I listen at lower volumes and have a bit of a channel tracking issue on the amp.

Bearing in mind my location (bottom tip of Africa) what would good amp upgrades be? I was thinking of the new 650A (bit sideways I know) but the only amps readily available here are the real mainstream - NAD, Rotel, CA etc - more exotics can be ordered in , but it's a bit of a lottery.

Looking for something to take a little more control and tighten things up.....

Cheers

Anthony

I would try 3 amps -

Cambridge 650A (tracking issue gone thanks to excellent new ALPs pot)

Rotel RA-04SE (superlatively balanced sounding)

NAD C326BEE (much cleaner than earlier NADs but with enough body to make the most of the MAs)

A good long comparative audition is in order here. I suspect the Rotel could prove to be unbeatable for your needs.

In agreement with MP really.

The NAD C326BEE or even the C355BEE integrateds would work very well with the M/A RX1's but so would the Rotel and possibly the Rotel RA06SE as well.

With regards to your sound issues currently; have you got the speakers on dedicated stands? If so are they mass loaded?

I'm going to buck the trend here - I've currently placed myself under a "No comment on Nad until I try one in a few weeks" mode

, and you have around 600 GBP the Creek Evo 2 is excellent choice with MAs.

Yes the RX1's are on mass loaded stands - unfortunately they don't bring in the RA-04SE, but I can get RA-05 or 06 std...

Can also get the NAD, unfortunately my nearest local dealer burnt down yesterday! I don't believe Creek are brought into SA at all....

Hi Anthony

As has already been suggested the NAD C326BEE is also one to consider as IME it works very well with the RX1's.

Thanks

I think the Rotels go extremely well with Monitor Audio's RX series. One thing the RX's need is an amp with a bit of current behind them, and with plenty of grip too, and the Rotel doesn't fail in these areas. They do need warming up though, so I'd recommend a good hour before listening to them. They have a fairly neutral tonal balance, but aren't scared to throw some detail at you. I usually find that of all the sub £500 or so amps, the Rotels do a better job than most when you're dealing with speakers that produce a lot of bass and need a high degree of control (B&W/Dynaudio/Monitor Audio etc).

Thanks Guys, the Rotel (some of them) and the NAD options I can get here, so off to do some auditioning... 🙂
