but the trouble is, of my disposable income, most is being spent on new vinyl. Adding up over the past couple of months a fair few bob has been spent. Drip, drip, drip... I think I need to tighten that tap for a while... I heard this was an expensive musical route to undertake.

How about a set of QAcoustics Concept 40s....only a few months old....hardly used...ahem.

siblings, when the 40's came out I was very interested in them. However, I was thinking about going slightly higher up the food chain a little, hence the need to stop spending elsewhere. Flogging the 20's hardly seems worth the effort. I offered them as a part exchange on a well known 2nd web site and their valuation was laughable to say the least. I'm not giving them away!

Sadly my current situation doesn't allow me to consider any further upgrades until funds have been discovered. I need to stop going out, too many shops around here offer decent second hand vinyl pickings and as for the internet, well I need a rather prolonged power cut! ;-)

to the phrase Life is short, when I was younger, yeah, yeah, time is on my side... then suddenly you realise the truth and it hits home hard. Hence my midlife crisis and foray into the delights of vinyl. I thought much the same with the financial cost of vinyl... it's only a few quid here and there, I'll limit myself to x number of favorite albums, but no it's got away from me, the horse has already bolted. Time to take stock, until I see the next 'must have' !

I read your comments and nodded sagely, lion. I remember when my daughter left home and I suddenly realised that I was 50...I couldn't believe it, I'd just not thought about age at all. I retired a couple of years ago (I'm now 60!) and I've had a huge vinyl monkey on my back for 40 years or so; I've told myself, 'I'll have to cut down then now' because I've simply not got the very decent amount of money coming in that I used to have. Can I stop buying stuff? NO! Do I buy less? Yes, simply by avoiding travelling to markets etc to find them. The idea of a few quid here and there is rather nice, but, as you've discovered, this is an addiction; on the upside, most of your records should hold or increase their value if you're lucky, especially good copies of older stuff.

As far as new speakers go, I'd try the second-hand market and look for things like old floor-standing Missions from their glory days of late 80's/90's.These can out-perform most modern speakers in terms of depth and imaging in my opinion. Many new speakers are rather forward for my liking so I prefer older stuff. Oh and look at Quad standmounts and floor-standers too: these have a nice, vinyl-friendly sound. All my opinion of course and there's plenty of other options.

Was very lucky last year - was made redundant in a well paid job that I bloody hated - upside is that I got a pay off of 3 years salary. Double result if you ask me.

Like most peeps, my family had grown, massive mortage, unsecured debt blah blah blah

Was well happy with my little Brio R and RP3, but was now able to signifacantly upgrade my hifi, pay off all my debt and a big chunk of mortgage - happy with my little system - i went on massive binge buying loads of vinyl, i mean new vinyl and have been largely dissapointed. Im very careful now what I buy especially new '180g reissues' - so much rubbiush out there!

Love scouring record fairs & car boots now for the bargains - last 180g reissue i bought was the Division Bell - I do a lot of research on reissues now.

came very much as a real surprise to me. Eighteen months or so ago I picked up an old but well looked after Ariston RD40, as much a curiosity as anything else. And within a year I had myself my Nottingham Analogue Spacedeck! I admit he 'idea' of vinyl greatly appealed. I think I was looking for a new practical, hands on hobby, the fact it was music related was perfect.

Downloading music simply wasn't doing it for me, cold, unemotional and distant. I have about 3TB of Flac files on my NAS so I'm not a basher of all things digital by a long way. Of course I appreciate the SQ it brngs but still I needed more. I read with interest the great debates on here, many people seemingly championing SQ over all else, bit rates, compression, mastering etc and I enjoy reading this (to a point) But when it gets overly technical (admittedly beyond my limited understanding) I switch off. Music to me is far beyond numbers and statistics, it's a living breathing thing, I want to get my hands dirty!

Admittedly it's filled a gap in my life, my personal circumstances have changed over the past couple of years, but I think vinyl is here to stay for me. I view it as a life long commitment, more than any woman will get out of me at the moment! ;-)

Sounds like you've got it bad! *biggrin*

In the digital verses analogue debate I've always considered myself something of a fence sitter, purely because I enjoy both, for very different reasons.Equally I don't see the point of slaggng something off, or attempting to ruin other's enjoyment. However of late I'm heading to the dark side, the vinyl side of things. I believe the statistics suggect vinyls rebirth is down to the hip and trendy, early to mid 20's lot taking an interest. I'll happily go along wiith that, will keep me happy and young at heart!

Vinyl is part of my life, i love it, the ritual, the cleaning regime, those Gyrodec weights spinning, valves glowing - bloody hell I am on one today!

Seriously I get immense pleasure from the sound, which is anything but mushy & warm - Anybody who hasn't heard a valve amp then go listen to one - they are far from boring.

Love record fairs, car boots i always pop into the charity shops you never what might be uncovered.

I smply don't get off my backside. I enjoy sampling fesh air, getting out and about, vinyl can be found in the most unexpected places...

I have a decent digital front end - yes in some situations I prefer it as its more convenient when your entertaining - but I also like to sit down and JUST listen to music and that is when a vinyl LP is played which is 90% of the time

90% vinyl

10% digital

You can't go rambling on about your vinyl fetishism in a thread entitled, 'I want new speakers.' Along with BBB, who has an even darker fetish (see other recent threads), you'll all be facing time in the sin bin. Anyway, what's the matter with you people? Don't you understand the science? Don't you do oscilloscopes? Get yourselves a decent streamer and stop this nonsense. You're not teenagers, you know.
