Hi is it possible to connect PS3 to stereo amp? I was looking at Arcam/Cambridge Audio but these stereo amps don't have optical inputs. Is there one which have? Or is the only way is to get either AV Receiver or blue ray player with analog outputs?

The component lead you got with the PS3 works just fine. You just plug in the stereo pair.

If you haven't got one, theres a couple on Amazon, one at £3.32.

True.. I completely forgot about this one (using HDMI directly to TV now).

What is the sound quality when using component lead? is optical much better?

It's not bad at all. You can't really directly compare to optical, as it then depends what you connect it to...as that will then be using the connecting devices DAC...

professorhat:You can hook your PS3 up to the TV using HDMI for picture and use the original AV lead that comes with the PS3 and hook the red and white pair to your amp for sound.

Yes this is exactly what I'm planning to do.. I was thinking about Arcam AVR350 or Onkyo875 in the past but because I will have only 2 speakers stereo amplifier looks like better solution for me (I have only one HDMI source now). Most likely I will connect PS3 to Arcam A36/A38 and have separate CD player for music Arcam CD36/CD37 unless someone can recommend different stereo cd/amp (my other post). Maybe in the future I when I get more speakers and AV receiver.

I use an HDMI connection between our PS3 and TV and have just also tried to connect the AV lead that comes with the PS3 from the PS3 into my Stereo Amp using the red and white phono inputs into AUX1 of the amp....and nothing comes out

All my AMP inputs work fine too so not sure why this doesn't work

Hi has your tv got a line output, if it has use that to connect to your amp. The sound should come out automaticly when your ps3 is connected by a hdmi socket.

My TV has L & R audio phono outputs from which I run QED cable into the L & R audio inputs of my stereo amp. This way I do indeed get sound coming out from my stereo speakers

However when I hook up the AV lead from the PS3 and connect the red and white ( not the yellow) leads into the L & R audio inputs of my amp....no sound comes out of the speakers which is strange to say the least

Ah, if you're taking the audio from your TV you must be sending the audio over HDMI to your TV.*edit* too slow, beaten to it

If you want to get sound from the AV lead, you have to go into: Settings> Sound settings> Audio output settings> Audio Input Connector/SCART/AV MULTI

You can't send audio over HDMI and the AV lead at the same time, as far as I know.

To the OP, there is another option for getting analogue audio from the PS3, and it's the little AV adaptor that you could buy for PS2. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-Sony-PlayStation-AV-Adaptor/dp/B0000541B0 It works fine with PS3, and allows you to use better interconnects. Some people swear this gives better quality. I have one, and have tried it, but I don't think the resulting quality is any better, even with a set of Ecosse phono leads. To me, the adaptor itself must be damaging the signal. But it's worth a try!

Another point on sound quality is that I find the direct connection from the PS3 sounds better than using my TV's outputs. BUT... i have lip-sync problems if I do, so I usually just use the TV outputs.

Big Blue you said that:

Ummm! I had a feeling that by connecting the PS3 straight into a stereo amp you would experience Lyp Sync problems and you have just testified to that in which case I shall continue to just use the phono leads I have connected directly from my TV's outputs to my Amps inputs which doesn't give me any problems whatsoever....my main concern when watching DVDs/Blu Rays is Dialogue as opposed to overly blown loud sounds enveloping me in a sea of sheer noise...if I can listen clearly to dialogue, which currently I can, I'm afraid I loose interest very quickly in a movie

I guess it depends on your TV set, and what image processing you use. Not really a problem if I have 'Game' mode switched on, but when I don't there's sometimes problems. It's a little annoying, as the sound is clearly better when taken direct from PS3.

You've lost me

Do you mean you can't listen to dialogue?

What I meant was that when watching movies the most important thing for me is to hear clear dialogue and therefore I can't bear to have lyp sycn problems spoiling the enjoyment of the movie for me....everything else takes second place to being able to hear clear dialogue free from annoying lyp sync problems

For this reason I will stick with my current set up of relying on the TV to output the sound through my stereo amp and then my hi fi speakers as this way I don't get any problems

i have a crt tv set with no hdmi inputs and use the composite red/white/yellow cables straight into the tv set. Then i use the tv audio out (rca red/white) straight into the denon av reciever and play it back in the pro logic 2 music mode. need for speed undercover sounds pretty darn good and i also tried it in the stereo setting which is not bad either..

But if you have an AV receiver, surely you'd be better with an optical lead? And then you could get an RGB scart for better picture quality.
