I respectfully direct you to the above post 12 by Shropshire Lad. AVI ADM 9 series are brilliant speakers, period, as well as incredible VFM. That is my experience of ownership, why would I not pass on that information when so few column inches are given over to them in mags etc.?

Personally, when I want to hear music brought to life I like to spend £20-£80 on a ticket to a gig.

Or better still, spend a long weekend at a music festival.

IME about £1k is about the turning point of getting into that optimum level.

Something like the Quad 57 or Magnepan MMG with a suitable amp gets you entry into the high end without the cost. As long as you have room for them that is.

Mind you you could spend a whole lot more, something like the AN Oto or M2 pre can add some icing on the cake, or the Decware Zen with some suitable speakers.

There are no hard and fast rules IME, apart from the most important part is the room its in.

Well I don't, "keep banging on about it".

I only speak of them where people ask for recommendations or similar questions as in this thread. Actives in general and AVI in particular get very little magazine inches but are wholeheartedly appreciated by their owners and I, like many others, share that positive experience with others.

There really is nothing to fear but fear itself. Actives suit me,and they just might suit others. It is only here and other forums that people will ever become aware of them.

No argument from me about live music.

Some of the best experiences have been for free with new bands in pubs for which there was no entry fee or increased bar prices. I wish I still had the level of mobility that would allow me to enjoy a gig but the speakers do the next best thing.

Wow, it's been ages since I added up the money spent on my hifi. Obviously it's evolved over the years and as I've sold things and ugraded, I've lost money. But just looking at the prices I paid for the current setup, we have:

Turntable 200, SRM-tech upgrade 200, cartridge 200

CD 400

Tuner 100

Phono stage 50

Amp 950

Speakers 600

Interconnects 100

Total 2800

Sheesh, didn't expect that, and probably I've lost an extra 700 getting to this stage. So 3.5k. But I'd say it's A LOT better than my last phase which must have been around 2k. Well worth the extra money.
