The Arcam will be run in if it has been used for three month.Arcam and Marantz will be tonally different.Arcam make very good cd players sounding natural. The louder you play it the better it will sound. It's just a case of getting used to the different tone of the player.

This also proves you should never buy anything without first giving equipment a listen. I'm sure you will be more than happy in the long run so chill out and enjoy.

It all depends how much though in those 3 months. My recent purchase - my cyrus 8SE took 250 hours non stop before it began to open up.

Leave it on play constantly for a good while and then make your mind up.

Also, define 'as good'? It should have bags more details.

You don't list the other kit either?

Cheers

I wouldn't listen to the last poster, he lost his marbles a few weeks ago and also lost £8m on his centre forward

my system

krell kav500i / kef reference 2.2 speakers. / marantz cd63se cd player.

the cd player has been on for the last 7 day so i am more then sure it is now run in.

the arcam cd37 a bit more detail but not as clear as the marantz cd cd63se

a £40 cd player on ebay 10 years and a bit old still holds it own with the new top of the range arcam.

i wish what hi-fi would do a new v old on amp /cds

the arcam is now being sold.

and i am going to buy a spare marantz cd63se

thanks for all the replys

That would be great! but I don't think many manufactures would be too happy placing adds in a mag which says a 10yr old cd players are better then a brand new model, even though this may well be the case. I am now using a 30yr old turntable I got for £35. imho its better then a project Xpression.

new does not always mean better. imo, more often than not, it means different (and comes with a waranty)

In my experience there's definately a difference between a 10 year old cd-player and a new one. I've compared Marantz cd 63 II with Arcam cd 192 and the difference was very noticable. The arcam in combination with Sennheiser HD650 and X-can had a much cleaner and punchier sound. I realise the Marantz you have is the Special Edition, but if you ask me something else is the culprit here. Could be system mismatch. If I were you I'd try different brands from your local dealer.

hi there

this as been the case with the last 10 cd player i have bought

i put them next to the marantz cd 63se and i finf the marantz give me 95% of the sound for a 5% of the cost so i have to ask my self is it worth the extra money adn time and time again the reply is no.

and there is a lot between the marantz 63 mk1 /mk2 /se/k sig.

the se have the deepest bass the sig has more mid range a bit like the audiolab has good bass the tag has more mid range.

and i am not on the hunt for a exposure 3010 as i am told it as got good bass and good timing.

like us all i have been at it for 20+ years asstill get the buzz of getting a new toy.

rock on the hi-fi

Fair enough. I never heard the Marantz Special Edition. Listening to quite a few dacs recently -Benchmark, Dacmagic, Cyrus Dac-X- so I can very well understand your point about it not being worth the extra money. To my ears the Cyrus DAC-X was brilliant....but at a price- 1700 euros. Outch! The dacmagic was quite good too, but not as 'hifi'- with that I mean separation, ease, naturalness. I suspect the Cyrus dac-x will give you just that extra quality of sound, but as I said, at a price.....

Hi,

The old Marantz cd63se is still a good machine. i compared it to the Arcam cd73t, cambridge audio 640c v2, NAD C542. Yes they may have more detail - but the old marantz was more musical and real sounding on my system (i picked more detail in the top end on the marantz and more natural mids). I even compared to the Marantz cd7001, I found the 7001 forward and digital sounding and the 63se more balanced tonally and surprisingly more depth in the soundstage - I kept the old machine

.

It was only when I listened to units quite a bit more expensive that I would consider like a naim 5i, or rega apollo but I heard a consonance cd120 linear and I bought that one- it to is a musical machine, I actually kept my marantz as well - I couldnt part with it as it still sound great on my system.

If you think about it the marantz 63se was a 350 pound machine in the mid 90's and even then they said it would take on 500 pound machines and often win. In comparison you would have to spend probably well over 500 pounds to significantly beat it now. Yes others are perhaps smoother more detailed but the the old marantz is so enjoyable to listen too.

Cheers,

Steve.
