I've just bought myself a new TV and Blue-Ray DVD. I now would like to add a sound system, mainly to enjoy DVDs. I have two problems however: Firstly, my wife. She hates the idea of her living room being taken-over with ugly speakers and the accompanying cables. Secondly, we can only site the TV in a left-hand corner of the room.

A couple of years ago I bought a Yamaha speaker projector and although it improved the sound quality, it never really produced the surround sound experience I was hoping for. As a regular reader of What Hi-Fi I have notice a few more manufactures are making them now so perhaps they have improved? I would love to hear from any readers who have had first hand experience of these new models.

Alternatively can anyone recommend a traditional speaker system, but that is discrete and won’t get vetoed by my wife - compact or wireless systems or a combination of both.

Many thanks

You don't mention budget, but how about the Sony DAV-IS50? It's based on the Sony DAV-IS10 which is an excellent system for the money. The speakers are literally golf ball sized and the 50 version has wireless rear speakers. Have seen it for £450 - £500.
EDIT - Just noticed you have Blu-Ray - which player? If you have one which can decode all the sound formats onboard and can cope with wired rear speakers - the Sony HT-IS100 would be a good alternative. It can accept Linear PCM via its HDMI socket, meaning you can get the HD audio formats if the BD player is capable of decoding them onboard. This can be found at about the same price.
