I blame Cr-Apple and the whole MP3 debacle. However it has always been the case. McDonalds have far more restaurants than Aberdeen Steak House, even in Aberdeen. Convenience always outnumbers quality.
Not sure I agree on the community aspect. Taking a bluetooth speaker into sports changing rooms has been a rite of passage since the ghetto blaster.
