Good evening,

I have just purchased my first turntable - the Rega RP1. I managed to break the needle on set up and now have the agonizing wait before a new cartridge arrives. Opted for the upgrade / performance kit. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

This comes with the Rega Bias 2 - I'm a little unsure how to remove the old cart and connect the new one. At least there will be a stylus guard in place this time! After that, as someone completely new to vinyl, do I need to purchase a vertical tracking force indicator or will using the cardboard spacer get me pretty close?

There also seems to be a lot of confusion regarding cartridge alignment? Is this actually as tricky as some folk make out? Surely getting it square in the head and matching up with the provided protractor will be enough no?

Moving on, I have the Pro-ject Phono Box USB V as a pre-amp. Choice of phono or usb outputs. I think I read that there's some analogue to digital conversion here. Am I being silly but have I defeated the purpose of listening to analogue by converting it to digital? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick entirely?

And finally, I'll do the majority of listening on my head phones but I have a nice sound bar which has a phono IN for those sociable (or loud listening) occassions. I need to purchase a phono to phono cable here. I'll keep the distance short, but beyond that, is there much difference between a £2-3 ebay phono (listed as shielded, ROHS compliant, gold plated etc) to one from the audio specialist shops? Again, I don't want to defeat the purpose and effort here of creating some high quality music.

If you've read this far, thank you. Any cable advice / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot wait to give those first few LP's a spin =)

OK firstly calm down

Secondly the Rega cart is easy to fit with its 3 point system so the cardboard prot will be ok

Use the project box as phono preamp to your sound bar*(the usb bit is for ripping to pc)

buy some cheap phono/rca cables for from project to sound bar

If you want good quaility sound buy a intergrated amp & speakers/ AV amp & speakers /Active speakers

*but if you do above and it sounds ok out off sound bar ignore the rest unless you want better

hope this makes sense because I'm well and truly under the influence

I think there is too much made of cart fitment & alignment. In essence it is a very simple job, the cardboard protractor is fine for Rega arms. Attach the tono arm wires with tweezers as it makes it a lot easier. Balance your arm so it floating then dial in your tracking & bias.

Simples

No problem, glad you understood my drunken ramblings. Enjoy the vinyl and

more importantly enjoy the music
