Hi,

I have just got a new Samsung b650 55inch 1080p lcd.

I connected up to my amp (Onkyo 706) exactly the same way as i had my hd ready plasma - but i am having a couple of problems and wondered if someone would guide me through the set up step by step please to start from scratch.

I have 4 hdmi inputs ( xbox, hdmi dvd recorder , sky hd and a bluray player - all connected up straight into the amp (including optical from dvd recorder ). I had no probems with the older tv .

I am using a plug in tv booster with 1 main ariel lead going into this (input) and 1 coming out .

I have connected up like this ;

Ariel from TV to RF out on Sky HD

Ariel in Sky HD going into dvd recorder ( RF out)

RF in from dvd recorder into Ariel booster plug.(output)

Scart from top of Sky Hd box (vcr) going in to bottom scart of dvd recorder (ext1)

Everything into receiver by hdmi - also optical lead from dvd recorder into receiver .

I was told i needed to add the other scart lead from sky into the tv - but thought this may be wrong !?

I am having a problem with sky hd - when i select the channel on the tv for it -its a lousy picture and says mono -until i select the source button on my remote and change it to hdmi, when i get a great picture . If i then for any reason try a freeview channel or analogue channel and then go back to sky - i have to re-select the hdmi through the remote all over again - i didn''t have to do this before !?

Also some of the people on nearly all channels have the lips not connecting to the words coming out - the sound coming out of the speakers is ahead of the peoples lips -looks like its being dubbed -but its live tv !

I would like to be able to record from Sky hd onto a dvd disc -so can anyone please guide me the right way to re-connect everything please as at the moment -i have 2 scart leads -one going from sky into dvd recorder and one going into the tv from sky - dont think this bit is right !?

I have tried a few thing with the ariel leads this afternoon - but it will only work the ways its connected with those leads - everything else results is just snow on the screen !

Thanks - all help is appreciated.

If you have Sky+HD, I don't understand why you're bothering with any aerial leads. They seem to be sending your system into confusion! Assuming you're happy using your Onkyo all the time when you're watching TV, all you need to do is connect your sources to its inputs and then take another HDMI to the TV. Don't forget optical from the Sky box to amp for Dolby Digital sound. You don't need optical from the DVD recorder as the HDMI cable is carrying surround sound info.

In order to record programmes on the DVD recorder, connect a scart between it and the Sky box. On my Panasonic, I set it to A2. Of course you can only record the programme you're watching or something you've recorded previously on the Sky box.

The only change might be if you want to watch TV without switching on the Onkyo - in that case, connect the HDMI from the Sky box to the TV direct.

Make sure you're using HDMI1 for your amp connection to the TV, That should autoswitch to SKY.

Without a ariel lead in my tv -i get no picture at all . The main ariel lead from the roof is going into a booster plug -in a plug socket .

I have everything going into my onkyo -all hdmi - it gives me sound out of all speakers without a optical in my sky box .

I have a optical lead in my dvd recorder .

Yes i am using hdmi 1 into amp output

Surely you're getting your TV via Sky HD? It gives you all the channels, so you don't need an aerial feed. You DO need optical from Sky HD but don't need one from the DVD recorder.

With Ref to the scart to DVD recorder, connect the TV output on the HD Box (RGB) to the DVD recorder, don't use the VCR output as it is only got composite output. That way you will got better recordings from Sky. As for all this aerial connections, why are you using them?

The ariel connections were all set up that way when i had Sky hd installed by Sky themselves - i haven't touched anything since then -up until now .

Gib ~ sky simply cannot output 5.1 through the hdmi. So your amps set wrong (Its set to 'pro logic' or similar to make the best of the 2 channel its receiving). You NEED an optical for dolby digital

The aerials are creating feedback. Remove them all

It could be your tv needs to be manually selected for hdmi (Mine does)

Sky engineers tend to install so it emulates the set up you already had - even if your set up could be improved or is unnecessary such as the scart from sky to TV. There is no need to have a Scart lead from the Sky box to the TV since it is merely the analogue version of whatever the hdmi is sending - unless you want to compare them, but the scart can not transmit high def and it will be sent as standard def.

There are reasons for having the rooftop aerial signal still a part of your set up.

If your sky signal fails, then you won't get terrestrial channels without the RF signal.

Your TV probably has a digital (Freeview) tuner, and so you could in theory record 2 sky channels simultaneously and watch a third channel either on terrestrial or freeview.

Your DVD recorder may also have a freeview tuner which further adds to your recording/viewing options.

My set up has the RF feed going first through the sky box and then through my DVD recorder before getting to the TV. I rarely need terrestrial or freeview, but they work ok in this manner.

You may be better off also sending the sky hdmi straight to the TV. The hdmi from the sky box only transmits stereo (as mentioned in other posts) so you may as well avoid unnecessary extra routing of the sky signal. You are also not short of hdmi inputs on your TV. The dolby digital 5.1 signal is only transmitted from sky boxes via one of its digital outputs - coaxial or optical, which definitely will go to your AV amp for decoding (5.1 only on some programmes).

You also seem to have lip-synch problems. Both your amp and the sky box have functions where you can alter the soundtrack timing so it matches the video.
