Hi all,

I am trying to set up some MT-30 speakers with a Pioneer VSX-LX53.

The manual of the PV-1 says it is "not a THX licensed component, but may be used with a THX controller"

Does that mean on the set up screen I select "no" to THX speakers, because they are not THX licensed, or "yes" because "they may be used with a THX controller"?

Confused!

Any advice, help, suggestions?

I did that with my setup below, never again, it was way to loud and tons of bass in my semi,

But might work for you, but THX means the bass can below a certain HZ and the speaker range can do certain levels.

So if your speakers are not registered, I would say no, but I know nothing

Thanks canada16,

That is sort of what I think, but the set up instructions for the B&W MT-30's don't make it clear. I think the safest bet is select "no", but if you are able to select "yes" and get a better set up then that would be preferable. If nobody knows then I think I will select "no".

Is it that important to make it a THX homecinema? For me, a THX cinema stands for way too much bass and a headache after the movie (together with muffled voices).

Making it THX doesn't mean it's going to be an inprovement (imho), but it might be worth a try and you might like it.

Oh forgot to mention THX is only good at reference levels, and if your speakers cant handle the reference THX level then they will wreck them.

I would select no

Thanks KevinJ

Interesting.

I naturally assumed that a THX set up would be better, not really sure why though?

Be interested to know what the general consensus is regarding wether or not to do a THX set up or not?

(Also re; my original post of whether to say the MT-30 are THX speakers or not?)

The general thought is this:

THX speakers like M&K are great, but as I said they only perform at reference levels, and if you have neighbours, you wont after.

Reference level is like glass shaking bass and loud everywere.

If this doesnt suit then I would not get a full THX set-up as your paying for something you can use the way its intended.

No your speakers are not THX.

Selecting THX on the AMP will set your speakers to small regardless of size and use 80Hz crossover for LFE (which is the THX standard). It is the case that THX is best played at reference levels which on the pioneer amp would be 0. I use THX surround mode for watching films i never reach 0 more like 25-20. I also use 100hz crossover as my rear speakers don't cover to 80hz. So you can mix it around and still use THX settings and not have to be at full volume it's really just another surround mode option if you like it use it if not stick to standard surround modes.

Gentlemen,

I watched a couple of movies today at the THX Reference Level of 0 (first time) and it really is something else.

Try it!

I am sure if I watched saving private ryan or black hawk down at reference without a THX subwoofer and speakers this would possibly break them?

Do you have all THX stuff, or was the THX put on your amp?

Thanks ronald

Ronald,

For this first time since getting my new Yammy, I have a spare 5 minutes to crank it up, see how it compares to the VSX-920 I replaced.

Demoing with iron Man 2 and transformers 2 at the moment.

After reading your comments I have just pumped it up from -10 to 0, time to hold on to something I think.

My speakers are not THX-compliant although my receiver is.

All of my speakers are set at the THX-recommended cross-over settings @ 80Hz all around.

It really is a BIG sound at this level and the steering and surround sound effects in particular are breathtaking - you are really immersed in the movie.

Personally though, I would only be able to do this with no one at home and sometime in the afternoon, like I did today.

If you have neigbours, forget it. I'm lucky I don't.

Would this not damage the speakers?

My amp is THX, but I just got my RX6 and dont want to damage them, or does the amp know how much my speakers can handle ect.

Or will the speakers never go pop, no matter how loud I put them?

Thanks

Getting rxfx tomorrow and really been dying to see saving private ryan on the new system, and just dont want an explosion and then the speakers or sub pop

My understanding is that all movie sound tracks are authored for 0.0, and all AV receivers should be quite happy at playing the sound tracks at this level, it is supposed to be the same level as a commerical cinema.

When your AV receiver does it's auto set up routine it will be doing that at 0.0 to ensure if you do crank it up, your speaker levels are not to high, so it will not damage your equipment.

It's just that is so damn loud, that most people, either due to them not likeing it or having neighbours dont have the sound track playing at this level generally, let face it I would hate to have to sit there whilst my wife is watching Coronation Street or something like that at 0.

My AV receiver is not THX certified, but the reference level is still 0, THX just means it meets and has been tested to their particular standards at 0.0

Good choice on the RXFX they are excellent at creating a rear stage.

Hi Canada

What volume do you normally have it on for movies and music for blu rays?

Cheers.

-20db but sometimes -18 and this is loud.

I cant imagine it droping to 0.
