HI there, this is my first post so apologies if this has all been asked before and I appear a bit daft.

I currently have an Toshiba 32" TV with 2 HDMI inputs and I am a little confused as to how to wire in a nice little 2.1 speaker system. Currently boh HDMI inputs are used, 1 for my SKY HD box and 1 for a PS3. All i want is a sound set up that has 2 fairly small speakers and a sub woofer and I belive this is know as a 2.1 system. I don't relish the thought of wires running everywhere and hence this is why I don't want an all singing and dancing 5.1 system. I have looked at the Sony DAV-F200 which sounds great but as I only have 2 inputs to my TV both of which are used and my PS3 plays bluRay discs it doesn't seem an option (or am I missing something).

Can anyone suggest the best way of hetting some good quality sound from my TV without it being huge speakers and wires run in everywhere.

Many thanks in advance

Andy You don't mention budget? If you want low cost, and have an existing hifi, then wire the sound through that. If not I suggest the Arcam Solo Movie 2.1 box with sub and stereo pair from (say) Monitor Audio. Look up speaker and sub recommendations on this site and then go and have a listen. The Arcam has 2 HDMI ins and 1 out which I think solves your TV socket problem. (Although, I've been wrong before!)

Well, as you have your PS3 already which can be used for Bluray and dvd, you don't need a system that gives you dvd player with amp all in one and then the speakers. Depending on your budget you need an AV receiver and 2 speakers and a subwoofer. The AV receiver could connect your ps3 and HD box to your screen - one hdmi cable from screen to receiver and then hdmi from ps3 to receiver and hdmi from Sky HD box to receiver. Something like the Sony STRDG820 (circa £200). You would then just need an optical or coaxial (depending on what your HD box has) to connect your HD box to your receiver for sound.

As for speakers - again, your budget is the key.

You could get something like this or spend more...

Thanks for the tips guys, I forgot to mention budget and the Sony at £200 sounds much more what I am after against the £1500 of teh Arcam (although it does look very nice). I saw a Bose system at the weekend which was a 2.1 system but couldn't see how it was wire but for £345 it sounded superb. I think you guys have hit the nail on the head though with the reciever solution although I am looking for something very small and discreet. Could I use the sound out from the TV through some sort of 2.1 speaker system of would the sound just be awful???

Many thanks in advance

Hi guys,

I have been surfing the net for hours now and you have me convinced that a separate AV amplifier is the answer. I actually have a Denon AV-1602 which I used with a Bose acoustimass 5 setup in my last house but it doesn't have any HDMI inputs/outputs as they weren't around a few years ago , such a shame as its like new :-(

Anyway the Sony STRDG820 seems to fit the bill and allow me to add more speakers later should I gt the opportunity to run cables under the floor. I can't find it for as little as £200 the cheapest so far is £250 delivered from superfi which you mentioned.

I recon I will get the Bose system out of the box again too as the speakers a nice and small with good sound.

Thanks again

Andy
