I'm looking to upgrade my system in the next few months and wondered about the most cost-efficient way for a long term upgrade. I'm saving for a house so a big purchase of everything I need in one go is out of the question. Last year I sold the CA640A which was taking care of 2-channel duties, and have been largely disappointed by the two-channel performance of the Sony strda3500es. This was a predictable outcome, I know, but there we go...
Eventually, I would like something like the Audiolab 8200ap and 8200x7 pair as the centre of my system, with an Oppo 105 or CA 752 BD taking care of decoding soundtracks, disc spinning, and dac-duties. An upgrade to speakers would come next, something like RX6s and a matching centre, but not counting out something a bit more special for a long-term solution. Happy enough with the subwoofer, and surrounds can come last, the IQ1s are fine for now. Will consider a projector in the future, but I'd like to get the audio sorted first.
So! What I'm after is a solid upgrade path with a focus on audio. I would like to enjoy listening to music as much, and hopefully much more, than I did when the 2 front channels were being driven by the CA640A, while providing a good base for future upgrades. Ideally I'd like to spend no more than £1500 on the first steps in the next 12 months.
Here are my thoughts for first steps:
1). A one-box solution like a second-hand AVR600. This clearly blows the above budget, but I could probably push it a bit.
2). Oppo 105/CA 752 BD as a processor and pre-amp driving a second-hand tag 100x5r. I only have a sky box and mac mini to connect up so this might suffice.
3). New front and centre speakers
4). Go back to a dedicated hifi amp driving the front 2 channels for a quick win until I've got multi 000s to chuck at the problem.
5). Push the boat out for the 8200ap and a cheaper second-hand power amp.
