Sorry if this is a basic question but upscaling still confuses me.

If I put a DVD in my pioneer DVD player which is hooked up to my Denon 4308 and I watch on my Sim2 80E projector I should be watching the movie upscaled to 1080p right?

If so,
  • which component is doing the upscaling?
  • do I have any control over which component is doing the upscaling?
  • is the native resolution of the DVD 576p unless it is blu-ray?
  • the pioneer DVD player is the only old component in this set up so would there be any advantage in upgrading my basic DVD player to say a Denon 2930?
  • should I upgrade to a blu-ray player and will this play my old DVD's as well as say the Denon 2930 would?
Answers to the above very much appreciated.

Pain hey ?! I've just posted re the search for a separate outboard scaler, as I want more quality and control of the scaling , particularly from a player I'm considering, than my current gear allows for...

I don't know your particular components in detail, but if you say your DVD player is old, then it is quite doubtful it will be upscaling, espcially to 1080p. You can certainly upgrade this to a number of players that now upscale DVD from source, apparently well... Have a look in the reviews section here, under specs, and it should tell you whether they upscale.

I don't know if your particular receiver upscales, but if you have a dig around in the settings it should be apparent if it does, and to what resolution it is doing it to. As for the best component to do the upscaling, it's all down to the particular chip being used...You'll just have to play and see which works the best. Sometimes it's the source, sometimes the receiver and sometimes the screen or projector. From what I have read of users opinions, it seems the video scaler in the Onkyo receivers is well rated, for a one box AV solution....

As for Bluray player vs upscaling DVD player being the better for DVD use, the jury seems to be out......

Your Denon 4308 will upscale to 1080p. If you had an upscaling dvd player it would do the upscaling unless you asked it not to and let the 4308 do it (probably would do a better job unless you had a really good upscaling dvd player). Therefore if you are happy with the Pioneer, I wouldn't bother upgrading it.

The posters receiver is one of Denon's top of the range models. The upscaling will be superb on that model. Out of interest OP, what Pioneer dvd player do you have?

Thank you Gerrardasnails for the very helpful info.

The Pioneer DVD player is only a cheapy - it is the DV310S. I'm pretty sure it has no upsacaling capability.

To see if my Denon is upscaling what do I look for in the menu/settings.

Cheers.
