hi all

im looking at these 3 headphones as £150 is my price limit.

i will be using them on my computer with a creative soundblaster z card

they will be mainly for gaming eg battlefield with movies second and music third

i always read comments that headphones are better than pc headsets if anyone could comfirm this

i would need closed headphones as i have noisey enviroment behind me

if anyone as had experience with the 3 headphones or give some advice i would be very greatful

For gaming the 770 might have a decent impact. The HP100 will have a light impact, and the 550 almost no impact.

Hi mosse33,

For out and out sound quality, we'd certainly suggest the AKG K550s - they won our Award at this price. We love them for their detailed, spacious and well-balanced sound - but then we do test primarily with music.

If you're looking for something with more bass, the DT770s are probably more what you're looking for. We found them a bit overpowering in the low end for our taste, hence the three star review.

The Soundmagics probably sit someway between the two of them in terms of character, so you have to weigh up exactly what it is you're looking for them to do. I'd go for the AKG's myself, but like the comment mentions above, they may not have the bassy impact you're looking for.

Seems like it would be powerful enough to drive them, if not to max volume perhaps. Can't speak from experience though, and I'd think 80 ohm version would be fine for your needs.

I would prefer the lower ohms just to be more current with modern headphone amps, but the final decision should be based on your hardware requirements.

The DT770 is very good, used by a lot of recording studios, but my money would be on the HP100. The DT770 might be a bit more comfy, although the clamp is very high on that one. The HP100 is not clampy, but has shallow driver depth, so your ears can touch them if they stick out a bit (like mine). Bass is less on the HP100 (more neutral), but it's smoother and the mids/highs are less messy and more exciting.

I would be careful with the K550 unless you can try it next to the others. a lot of people find it tough to get on with (sound and comfort), including me.

I own all three and out of them I much prefer the German tank the DT770. It has a thicker, livelier sound with thumping bass and a wider soundstage then both. The soundmagic and AKG sound similar with the AKG sounding a bot thinner with less bass pressence but it's more detailed by a slight amount.

K550 vs DT770

The Beyer are wider in stage by a noticeable amount and has a more exciting musical sound. The AKG are a bit more sterile and dull but more neutral sounding. For professionals the AKG will be a good choice but for gaming, fun listening. the quite balanced, hard hitting DT770 is very hard to beat.
