Hello all and apologies for my ignorance on the subject of home cinema. I have decided to enter the world of surround sound but I am still very new to this complicated arena. I have approx. £1500 to spend on a 5.1 speaker system and have been reading the reviews on What HiFi.

The question I have is about the new Yamaha NS700 system ( which sits well with the other half due to it's gloss finish ), this speaker set up was priced at over £2000 and recently reviewed by What HiFi where it received 3 stars. However I have now seen this for £1200, and was wondering if it becomes good value at that price or would I be better off buying one of the 5 star systems within my original budget.

Many thanks for any advice / assistance given, as I am getting more confused by the day due to the numerous systems out there!!

I'd still buy a five-star speaker package within your original budget. Check out our Best Buys for some suggestions. The B&W 685 Theatre system at £1200 would make an excellent choice. Do you have a multichannel amp already?

I have a Sony 2400, and am looking to combine it with a Denon 2500 blu ray player, but it is the speaker package that is the stumbling block. I have read most of the Best Buy reviews, and like the look of the B + W's, but I think I have to compromise with a gloss black finish on whatever I buy, for peace with my other half!!

I think that it might come down to the Dali Fazon or B@W's MT 30 ( I take it that even at £1200 the Yamaha set up wouldn't be comparable with these other 2 ? )

Thanks once again for any suggestions!
