Headphones with hearing aids

A first post here, so hello. :)

I’m looking to buy decent headphones to build up a computer-based music system. These are going to be an investment for serious listening, I’ve decided on headphone listening as I’m the only user. The problem is, I wear hearing aids, these are very small, latest tech, with tiny in-ear canal receivers and very small microphone/power units behind the ear.

Does anyone here use headphones with hearing aids, and how do you get on with them? Could you describes your experiences with them?

At the moment I think my hearing is good enough to listen without hearing aids and with decent Shure IEC phones and not lose much from what I’m hearing, but it’s going to get worse.

I also need to buy a DAC and headphone amp, or combo, and the headphones will come after that but I’d really like to get some feedback on this issue at this stage, please, if anyone has experience they can share.

TIA.

Have you run this question (about the headphone) past your audiologist?

Hi

I did when I went for the initial hearing check and she couldn't give me an answer, mostly because the technology of the hearing aids I chose (Siemens Binax 7) was too new for her to have any feedback from her clients. A the sales seminar she went to, this question was asked and Siemens said that with properly fitting over-ear headphones there shouldn't be any problems. Of course they would. :) I'm seeing her again this weekend for the first follow-up. Now that I'm getting the best out of live concerts again I'm keen to do the same with my home music.

The sound from a headphone is a facsimile of sound from normal distant sources, but there are technical differences, especially in reinforcement of the sound waves provided by the headphone, not to mention resonance peaks. Also to note: Headphones with recesses in the freq. response can be very deceptive as to how loud they really are.

Thank you, that’s very helpful. Really, you’ve confirmed my decision to buy these expensive aids with their programmability, thinking of them as part of my music system, was the right one. :)

I’m hoping there’s someone who does listen on headphones with hearing aids, and whether they’ve had any problems with feedback. That was something the audiologist did mention.
