Hi i have a pair of Audio Technica ATHAD700 and am looking for an upgrade .I have them connected to my Caimen and i reckon they are a bit bass light as well as being big and baulky also they dont actually sit right next to ur ear ,theres quite a gap inside them .If u put some pressure on them u get better bass

Anyway been thinking of Grado sr60i and sr80i as well as sennheiser Hd555 and Hd595 .Am i right inthinking that the later two are Sennheiser answer to the sr60/80 ?

Cant help but noticeing how better looking the senns are as well as better built .Didnt want to spend above £150 unless somone can convince me that the HD650 are worth the extra Money!

What do u think ?

Thanks Mark

The Senns are fine headphones but I doubt they are what you are looking for if you want better bass. I would recommend you to audition some Beyerdynamic or Denon headphones. I think they will suit you better.

Hi Mark. I think your plan is not an upgrade as opposed to you getting another set of headphones for when you want more bass. I agree with the advice re the Denons and the AH D1001 do bass. But there is bass detail and BASS. The Denons do BASS which can overwhelm the midrange and drive rather than complement the rest of the music. That is ideal for dance, some rock but not for other genres. The Denons are closed backed, which helps any headphone to do BASS.

I have Grados that are 9 years old and they are going strong. There is nothing wrong with their build so long as you take care of them. I would rate the SR60 and 80 with the Senns. The Grados are more dynamic.

If you really want to upgrade then something like the HD650s are what you are looking at getting.

Mark, if you're thinking of getting the Grados and you're in the UK, I recently ordered a pair of the SR125's for £89 + P&P from hughesdirect.com I wasn't too sure about them, but sure enough, 3 days later I had my headphones delivered. And they sound amazing.. mind you they're not the newer "i" models, but for that price, I think it's worth it.

The Grados sound better than my home HiFi setup, plugged straight into a computer. And they sound even better plugged into my marantz pm6002 amp.

hope this helps.
