Hi frens,

i got a brand new ht setup but it's not always convinient to watch full blast without disturbing someone in the family specially at night. So i decided to go for headphones.

Are there some kind of special 5.1 headphones that are designed for HT usage ? Is it better to go for wired or wirelesss...? i'll be 2-3 meters from the AVR ( Yamaha RX V 450)

Can you guys make a few good suggestions...?

Cheers :)

I haven't used 5.1 surround sound headphones but I do watch movies using my headphone set up, with great pleasure. I would have thought that having cramming 5 tiny 'satellites' and a 'subwoofer' into a pair of headphones would be seriously detrimental to the sound quality, compared to a pair of stereo headphones.

A good pair of stereo headphones should have the soundstaging to give an immersive experience and the bass quality and quantity to fill in all the LFE. No headphones make your sofa shake with bass, though..

ignore my ignorance but....

1. is the Pioneer SE DRS3000C supposed to be superior to the Pioneer SE DIR800CII...?

2. Dolby Headphone ( Some Doubts )

- if a AVR has "Dolby Headphone" eg. Marantz SR 7005 does that mean we can use a regular stereo headphone to get 5.1 sound ? or do we still need a 5.1 headphone to get 5.1 sound ? In that case how does it make a difference if the AVR has "Dolby Headphone"....?

- and if the AVR does not have "Dolby Headphone" then do we need a 5.1 headphone to get 5.1 sound ?

i'm confused....

To answer your question Dolby Headphone does not require 5.1 headphones. 5.1 headphones are not recommended for listening to movies, they're a gimmick compared to Dolby Headphone. Dolby Headphone converts the 5.1 soundtrack to stereo for your headphones and the stereo sound emulates 5.1 channels. It's based on general ear characteristics and results vary by individual, it works quite well for me.

The good news (I think) is that you don't need to invest in a dedicated Dolby Headphone box like the Pioneer. Your Yamaha receiver should have a feature called "Yamaha Silent Cinema". This is Yamaha's version of Dolby Headphone. I've never heard it , but I've read about a few people who compared it very favourably to Dolby Headphone.

Check out your manual and see it you have this feature and try it out for yourself using any decent headphones, preferably open back and over ear rather than buds .

Plus 1. I well remember the days when one of THE selling points of a movie was that it was recorded in Dolby stereo, with the proviso..."In selected cinemas".

It was good enough for me then and it's sure good enough for me now (each to their own, of course).
