Head-fi is better than hi-fi – but not nearly as fun

"Headfi>Hifi" The boldest statement ever in audioland. Clearly the author has never heard the limitations of a headphone. And clearly the author has never heard a good hifi audio set.

I must strenuously disagree with the proposition that head-fi is non-tweakable plug 'n play. Yes, the "room issues" do not apply, but for Audioheadphiles, there are many choices, including system matching, e.g. what's the best amp to power my power-hungry planar cans, not to mention choosing your headphones in the first place. Head-Fi has exploded over the last 25 years, with many new technologies and purveyors. I have rebuilt my headphones-only system over the past year, reading reviews and buying used when possible. I have a Jay's Audio CD2 mk3 transport into a Reimyo DAP-777 dac, running balanced into a Linear Tube Audio Z10 integrated/headphone amp with separate linear power supply, out to Dan Clark Audio Stealth closed-back headphones. I have upgraded my interconnects from Nirvana Audio S-L to Zavfino Fusion II, and compared the balanced XLR version of the Fusion II to the single-ended RCA version. (Balanced took 2 weeks to burn in, but won in a landslide.) I went from stock power cords to two Zavfinos and one Audio Sensibility Statement, and I tried each cord on each component until I got the best system sound. Next step will be graphene-infused cables, either from Zavfino or Cerious Technologies. And maybe changing out the el-84 power tubes in the LTA to up the boogie factor. I have nothing against speakers, but my wife does. A good pair of headphones is like a microscope into the music. With the best gear, you can hear things you never heard before because it's like you're in the recording studio with the band. Head-fi rules!
