Hi all this is my first post as i've not long joined. First my Equipment, AV Amp = Onkyo TX-SR605 (this will be upgraded next year when finances allow), PS3 for Blue ray and games, TV = Pioneer PDP-LX5090 and SKY HD. I am looking at HDMI cables and wondered if the Wireworld Ultraviolet 2m at arond £130 is really that much better than say the QED Reference HDMI-SR at the same length for around £71. I am thinking maybe Wireworld from PS3 to AMP and AMP to TV then a QED from SKY to AMP as its only 1080i. Does this make sense???? any imput from my fellow members and What hi-fi staff would be most appreciated.

This is from a mate who is a mechanical engineer from the world of gyroscopes and lazers (so by necessity I am paraphrasing). All cables benefit from some form of shielding to reduce interference by it and on it. Far more important than the actual cable is the termination. How the cable connects into the termination and how the termination connects into its socket is vital for a pure signal. So his reasoning is to by a well made cable with good solid terminations that fit properly.

It is certainly my experience, with mains and USB cables that I have found an improvement in sound when I changed to a cable that fitted better into its socket. That was before my mate had told me about the above.

So whatever cable you get, check its termination to ensure it appears solid (there is a picture of a dodgy termination in another thread, the cable was QED, but I and others have found QED to be otherwise fine). Then see how well the cable fits into its socket.

So my advice, based on the use of most types of cable (not HDMI) is to buy better than a cheapo cable constructed to a minimum level, but watch out for spending silly amounts of money, especially if you connect the cable and it is lose in the socket. I would by cheaper if the fit is better.

Short answer = No

Stick with well made cheaper cables and spend the rest on blurays and games. Hdcable, markgrant and tmfsolutions have all sold me cables at a fraction of the prices you're looking at paying and are all more than up to the job.

As you can imagine the topic does come up (a lot), so a search will help you find the answers.

Welcome to the forum BTW.
