Have Sky HD and hard drive is nearly full with HD movies (none of which I really want to delete).

Is it possible to record the HD films on Sky onto a DVD/HDD recorder direct from Sky HD and if so, will playback be in same HD quality?

You can record from your Sky HD box, but only at SD quality and stereo sound - all about copyright protection etc.

Maybe you should consider a hard-drive upgrade for your box? There's a few people on here that have done it - I believe, in fact, DJ Krime detailed how he did his upgrade on a thread. Will see if I can find....
