I am buying me home cinema system in stages (unfortunately)
and the first step is to buy TV and a Blu-Ray player. Receiver and the speakers
package will come at the next stage.

I would like to use my old Denon DHT-500 for the time being
for sound. Is there a way I can enjoy HD sound by buying a blu-ray player with HD
decoding on-board and connecting it to my Denon? Is there a way the two can be
connected? I am close to buy Pioneer KRP-500A so was thinking about Blu-Ray
player from the same brand – maybe LX-51. Will it work or there is some other
player I have to buy, or maybe there is no way it will work.

Thank you for all advice.

I don't think the Denon has the required multi-channel inputs (it's a slightly long-in-the-tooth HCIAB). So I think HD sound is off the menu for you I'm afraid.

I would imagine that it has some form of digital input though, so you'll still be able to get regular DD/DTS through it. You'll just need the appropriate digital cable from the Blu-Ray to your Denon. Allowing you to use the superior visual DVD performance of the Blu-Ray player, while using your Denon for sound.

I gave my parents my old Sony DAV-S550 (A unit not too disimilar to your Denon), they have a Blu-ray player connected to it for the surround sound in exactly the way i mentioned above. Works fine, they love it.
