I may be wrong but I believe the PS3 outputs at 720p/1080p therefore it wouldn't be able to run at that resolution and probably will need to be set at 720p, it sounds like more of a monitor resolution. How much are you looking to spend and what size?

Yup, depending on the capabilities of the TV, it would either accept the 720p output and upscale it or accept the 1080p signal and downscale it to fit the TV. To be sure it could do one of these, you'd need to make sure it has the HD Ready logo on it - this guarantees that it could at least accept the 720p signal. What's the make and model?

Well, impressive feature list for the price, it has the HD Ready tag which means it will definitely accept the PS3 signal. I've no idea whether it's any good, I would imagine a more expensive set from one of the main brands is going to be a better set, but it looks like you'd have to add about £100 to your budget to get one of those so I guess you can't complain!

Personally I would avoid 'no-name' tv's and monitors like the plaque. They're generally very poor.

Does he really need a TV? You can get a 22" widescreen Dell monitor for £160

That leaves another £40 to buy speakers. Something like the Edifer (which has 2 inputs so he could plug in his iPod as well) at £44 or the JBL creatures at £46 would do the job.

I'd bet that would give significantly better sound and picture quality than the Tesco set. The only other thing you'd need to add woudl be a HDMI to DVI converter - only a few pounds from CableUniverse or somewhere similar.
