HD DVD player and discs

I am considering buying a Toshiba EP35 HD DVD player and some HD DVD discs. Does anyone know where I can get a new player from, cheaply? It needs to be cheap and new so that I get at least 12 months warranty.

Does anyone know of a good site to buy the discs from? I am hoping to buy 20 or 30 of them providing they are cheap enough.

If it is cheap enough it could be a worthwhile activity and I believe that there will be a few more new films released.

What does anyone think?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I dunno how wise it's gonna prove to be opting for what is becoming ever more clear, an obsolete format. I guess if you can find a player cheap enough, and find cheap films then I guess it could be worth it. But I'd be worried about what to do with those films when the player packs up in the future and replacement players will be as thin on the ground as rocking horse s***. Maybe one of the LG multi-format players would be a better bet?

I have an HD DVD player (don't laugh) but I didn't buy it for HD DVD! I beought it as a cheap up-scaler for my collection of standard def DVDs'/As for where to look a few of the online retailers such as play and HMV are selling a few of their discs for under a tenner.

I am also intending to use it as an upscaler if it proves better than my Blu ray pana BD30.

With HD DVD being essentially obsolete, I am hoping that an opportunity to buy in to this may present itself.

If I could get hold of a player for £150 and 50 discs at perhaps £4 a time, that would give a layout of £350 or in effect £7 per disc (as the player is unique and has to be factored in).

IMO, this may be an acceptable cost to have a library of good quality films plus the added bonus if it was a very good upscaler.

Am I dreaming?

Yeah, to be honest. How much would £350 buy you in BluRay film rental from Blockbuster? Two years (by my calculation), 3 films at a time, as many films as you like per month.

Furthermore, can you find 50 films on HD-DVD that you actually want to a) watch and b) keep, for £4 each?

As Duncan said, HMV are good for the discs. Most are just £5.
Can recommend - The Kingdom (£5), American Gangster (£5), Transformers (£10), Atonement (£5), Disturbia (£7.99), Inside man (£5), Casino (£5) and there's plenty more.

Unfortunately I think you may have missed your chance of an ultra cheap EP-35, I don't know anywhere still selling them brand new and they are going for around £140 on ebay.

Yep point taken. Foxja mentioned some good films but it may be a struggle to get anywhere near 50. Your suggestion of renting blu rays might be the best way to go.

I got my EP-35 just before Warner pulled out - so for me all the bargains now are great. Not sure if I would have bought one after the Warner decision though. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, I can see 20 maybe 30 great titles otherwise I'd go the Blu Ray route.
