Hola folks,

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f46/hotrodding-x-fi-laymans-guide-no-56k-226975/

I found this searching around for opinions on the value of an external DAC for stereo output from my X-Fi card (which I'd still be interested in).

Obviously not a good plan with a card in warranty, or if not confident about your ability with a soldering iron. Also wonder how much it would affect kernel streaming or ASIO playback.

Hi 'whorlsy'

The X-Fi is an average sound card when it comes to gaming, music and movies. I know many would swear by it for games, but do you honestly 'only' play games? The card is also a year old now and there is MUCH better tech is out there. For instance, if your into your audio, get yourself the long awaited Asus Xonar HDAV1.3. The deluxe edition has the option you probably will want and as the card is being used by some rather impatient people in the world and ratings have not been so high, which (iMHO) I totally disagree with and feel it's finally the card EVERY HTPC should have and if not, ALL standard PC's out there even!

The card isn't cheap for a sound card, but then when has quality great options and decent branding ever been cheap. One advantage right now, as I mentioned, the unofficial reviews for the Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 haven't been great, so the value has been roller coasting a little and making it a bargain currently. I was lucky to get mine nearly £60 GBP cheaper than normal, but can see the prices are starting to climb heavily already.
