I got the amp, WOW!!!!

I had a Yamaha DSP-A595a and it just blows it away. Now I need to upgrade my speakers. I have had mine since 1996 so I am sure that things have moved on since then.

My current budget it £350. Can I get good ones that are worthy of this amp for this price or should I save up more? I don't care what they look like but I have heard of style speakers. Are these just good to look at or is the sound good as well? Do you pay much more for the looks compared to a comprable set of 'normal' speakers?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Q Acoustics 1010 Package fits the bill at £300, but you would obviously get a better sound from saving up, probably for the upgraded 1010i Package for £500, or even better, something like the Tannoy Mercury F1 Package at £700. NB - I don't necessarily advise purchasing from Superfi and I haven't made any effort to see if they're cheaper elsewhere, just an easy site to post to!

"Style" speakers are so named as they are generally smaller and look less obtrusive than "traditional" speakers and thus fit in with the decor of a "stylish" living room. You'll always get a better sound performance from the best similarly priced traditional speaker package compared to the equivalent style package (and I think traditional speakers look better too!).

UPDATE: Friday evening and we've almost finished listening and are about to start writing. Hope to have the TX-SR606 review up on line tomorrow morning, as early as possible...

Hi just a suggestion & i know it's a bit more than £350, but for £500 you could consider Quad L-ite, you will get 5.1 speakers & then get another two when you can afford it.

(just a suggestion)

Yup, tis a good idea. Most of the traditional speaker 5.1 packages you can do the same as well as they're normally made up of 4 stereo speakers and a dedicated centre e.g. with 1080i package above, you could add another set of 1080is to make 7.1, or you could add the 1000Ci centre speaker at back for a 6.1 system. Same with the Tannoys mentioned as well.

I had a quick look on the net for them. so far the cheapest ones are £900.

If this is the sort of price then I will carry on saving and wait for the awards issue to make up my mind, but I welcome any more suggestions.

would you consider getting speakers separately and then later replace the others one by one b and w 685 cinema system, you could get the 685's for 380 i think, personally my budget is always tight and this us the route i would choose im sur there are many different brands you will find you could do this with an rs1 package maybe ? just the only way some of us will ever be able to afford mid range hifi unfortunately. failing that tannoy custom f1 5.1 package for around a monkey.

those tannoys are 600 on hifix.co.uk. alternatively you can get a pair of f1's for 89 on audioaffair.co.uk[get 2 of those 178] and get a mercury fc centre for 110 off of hifibitz.co.uk [290] and save more for a sub but then uv got near enough a whole package that will be fairly good for near your budget the sub that comes in the package is 500 to buy separately so the package is a good deal [the subs tannoy ts12] the lower models in the tannoy sub range is as follows ts10 400 or ts8 240 all off hifibitz
hopefully this will help you remember to demo demo demo
