Morning,

I was just wondering what the characterisitcs of the Dynaudio speaker range were like. Or are all their speakers totally different......do they have excellent timing? are they smooth, are they good for long listening sessions?..

I know the question is fairly open but a general impression would be great.

Smooth but very lucid top end, full bottom end.

Very dynamic and respond well to better than average amplification.

thanks .....very much.

do they have excellent timing as well?

I know from listening to the older 52 series, they can be bass-heavy. They are usually rear ported, so not much cop if you're planning on placing them close to the wall. . .

. . .Recommended with Cyrus electronics, but they require a lean, rhythmic sounding amp. Avoid using with Arcam amps, they just do not gel well at all imo.

Odd, if anything I find my 52SEs a bit lacking in bass...

I ran my Countours on the end of a Naim NAP 140 power amp for 8 years, and I must admit the bass was not huge; but it was very well controlled and musically relevant.

I think Dynaudios are generally quite unforgiving of amplification. A stronger amp will grip them and allow their (over engineered) bass drivers to do their stuff. My Cyrus 8 XPd/PSX-R can just about cope with the Contours, but I have heard them on the end of both Cyrus Mono X's and a Bryston 4b SST(2) and they sounded amazing.

Dynaudio are great speakers though. It is no coincidence that the BBC has started to use them as their reference monitors...

I agree with jockey, they do need an amp they will take them by the scruff of the neck, so as to speak. I've had my Dynaudio DM 2/7's for just over 6 months and my old amp (CA 540A) really wasn't up to the job so I upgraded to a CA 650A and thing are much, much improved.

They are not the sort of speakers to buy if you prefer you music to be presented in a laid back, restrained manner. I wouldn't go so far as to call them unruly but they are definitely lively and like plenty of space from rear/side walls to get the best from them.

Hi Dave,

I've owned Dynaudio Excite X12, X16s, and now Contour S1.4s. I've also owned quite a few other speaker brands. I would call the Dyns I've owned smooth and warm, yet still somehow maintain very good detail. They sound rich and lush, but again, somehow they do it while still delivering the goods in the detail department. Zero listening fatigue. Very musical. A definate music lovers speakers. My contours are truly a joy to listen to. I agree that they need lots of space around them or the bass can be too much, but on the other hand, position them right and the bass is very much first class. Deep and articulate bass can be achieved.

However, with all that said, I do think that there are more neutral speaker options that provide an even deeper resolution and midrange clarity. I would not pick Dynaudio if I was a professional studio engineer. I would look to PMC or ATC for that type of job. But for me, the Dyns tick all my boxes. I still love the contours after about 9 months of listening to them every day. And for me that's one long stretch with no change...

A few words that spring to my mind when describing Dynaudio speakers are dynamic, rich, rhythmic, detailed, fluid and powerful.

Btw, ime some of the manufacturers amplifiers Dynaudio speakers work well with are from NAD, Naim, Cyrus, Chord Electronics, Densen, ATC, Krell, Yamaha, Plinius and also Pioneer's A-400.

Thanks

hi scissor digits, im considering these speakers, on the dynaudio website they state that these speakers are fine next to a wall, but you think not? how much space do you feel they need? more than 20cm perhaps? id like to be able to place them at least that close.. ta...
