Andy Clough:Sorry BigBoss, I was misinformed: it's the V20 we're getting in (37in LCD), not the VT20.

My intuition may still work. August issue is out in July, isn't it?

Actually, due to our rather odd 13-issue schedule, the August issue hits the shelves in June - albeit 30th June! Subscribers will have their copies from 25th June.

I had a demo of the vt20 yesterday i was very impressed with the picture quality. The skin tones looked natural and the blacks were deep and dark. This might be the tv I will buy but I'm going to see what the philips 9705 will be like before buy any tv first.

For my needs and preferences I seriously doubt Philips 9705 will be any match for Panasonic VT20!

But only time and some serious reviews will tell

I saw the VT20 in my local Panasonic store today and was impressed with the 3D effect - it was better than i had expected.

Only 2 things put me off buying this set at the moment;

1] The price is a lot higher than the Samsung PS50C7000 plasma

2] Will the VT20 suffer from the rising black level issue that Panasonic has said that is normal, though have implemented a more gradual increase on the 2010 models apparently. If am spending £2000+ on a TV i don't want the blacks turning greyish after a few hundred hours!

Does anyone know how the VT20 compares to the Samsung or whether the VT20's have been programmed to increase voltage after a set period of time like the other models and therefore lose black levels?

Can't comment on the comparison, and I haven't even begun to tinker with the picture settings yet (beyond specifying 'home' rather than 'shop' settings), but I'm staggered by it. My previous Pioneer was the last of the 43"-ers, and therefore neither Kuro nor full HD, but this is in an entirely different league.

In car footage from this weekend's GP was the first time I've ever had a real feeling of what it's actually like to be in an F1 car, and it handles upscaled DVDs with aplomb. We watched 'Aliens' last night, and both saw and heard things we'd not picked up on before. I also swapped the existing HDMI leads (van den hul) for the best Cambridge Audio ones, and having run them back to back I have a feeling they have also helped.

Blacks are inky when necessary and allow for very fine gradations, colours are spot-on, the sense of three dimensionality is very strong and motion is wonderfully fluid. The whole experience is, for want of a better word, cinematic.

Alas, where special effects are not top-notch, you aren't going to miss them. A couple of the shots in 'Aliens' had us muttering a Pythonesque 'It's only a model.'

The question is, if the set is available to buy, why hasn't the magazine been able to get hold of one?

Because we are waiting for review samples. First 'V' series set with us, however - review imminent...

It's quite common, by the way, for manufacturers to get products in retail before the review is out.

Any idea how far off the review of the panny V20 is as I'm seriously considering ordering one

When a new tv comes out does the manufacturer automatically send u a sample for review - or does the magazine have to go and aquire one ?

I could see manufacturers being keen to have their stuff reviewed if they're confident of getting 4/5 stars - but maybe not so keen if they're only going to get 2/3 stars.

We typically start badgering for all/any test samples as soon as they're previewed (eg at CES event in January) and don't stop until we've got plenty to test. If we really need to, we'll borrow/buy kit elsewhere, but don't have endless budget to do so...

ive been reading a few user reviews of the vt20 on other forums , it turns out that "tlc borehamwood" have a 50vt20 setup right next to a 50in krp500 in a demo room , the kuro was calibrated , while the panny was not , having been only unpacked from the box a few days ago ..

several people that have seen the two side by side , say that the kuros blacks are still ever so slightly deeper , but , interestingly , the panny has a more detailed , punchy , brighter picture , when showing bright movie scenes , and is equally as good , if not better , with shadow detail as the kuro in dark scenes , basically the consencus is the panny is better . but i guess we will see ..

Yes it is, and I believe the request was for the TX-P42V20 instead. But as far I recall from another thread there should be a review of this set in the July issue as well
